Coalition Suspends Operations in Najaf

<snip>Asked if al-Sadr might have a political role in the new Iraq, al-Rubaie said: "I do not see any reason that prevents any political movement that uses democratic means and political activities from being part of the Iraqi state and from participating in the building of Iraq."

3. could be a positive sign
interesting. that might be a move that would blunt opposition from locals... I doub't bush has the balls to do it though. Not enough americans and especially him would ever see the wisdom of it.

19. No one likes to mention it but Fallujah is now under Shia law
Just like a little Afghanistan in the middle of Iraq that the USA "controls". Who would have thought?

4. This is the ultimate flip-flop
this guy has been labeled a terrorist but now we're negotiating with him and he can now turn his group into a political party? I wish these guys would be a little more clear on who we're suppose to be mad at.

5. Tough on terrorism
Bush is certainly teaching those terrorists in Iraq a thing to two. If they piss him off, they might give a government position.

8. Last Voice of America poll in Iraq had Sadr with 32%
STRONG support and 40% moderate support.

We've been chasing around and trying to kill the guy who is the second most popular leader in Iraq after Sistani!!

14. That rumble coming from Iraq
is the sound of a very "radical" (read hacked off at America) cleric who is about to become their leader, whether its al Sadr or another one.

We are so screwed and so naive to think we can install a puppet who will last more than 10 minutes.

This is all so needless and sad.

15. I agree Jacobin....
What do you suppose is the life expectancy of the 14 Military bases and that brand spanking new Embassy for Negroponte that holds 3000 employees? Their plan is a fantasy that will cost many more lives and Billions more from the taxpayer. What a fucking waste. I only pray these idiots will be held accountable.

28. It all depends on what the Ouija board says any given day. Or hour.
Or maybe they still have one of those old Magic Eight Ball things.
"chances are good" is one answer, IIRC. I broke mine decades ago.

25. Two VPs for Iraq?
Could al Sadr be one of those?

Bushco will do ANYTHNG to stay in power and keep the Multi-Corps in Iraq. The goal is to bring the attacks on the Occupation down to a point that it looks like a BushCo "Mission Accomplished".

Does anyone here believe that BushCo cares about "democracy" in Iraq or Amerika?

29. Important update!! (or the Flop has now Flipped)
KUFA, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. troops clashed with Iraqi fighters from Moqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army militia on Friday near the holy city Najaf, a day after the rebel Shi'ite cleric offered a truce that U.S. forces agreed to respect.

Sadr's men, who had all but disappeared from the streets of Najaf on Thursday, were out again armed and in force and some of them fired on a car carrying a rival Shi'ite politician after he attended Friday prayers at Najaf's main mosque.

The status of the cease-fire offered by Sadr after nearly two months of Shi'ite uprising across southern Iraq was unclear.

Sadr's supporters accused the Americans of a breach of faith in setting up roadblocks that forced their leader to lie low and miss his weekly Friday sermon at Kufa, just outside Najaf. Aides said Sadr had stayed away for fear of being captured
