Ashcroft, Mueller press conference: sowing panic to prepare a provocation
By Barry Grey
28 May 2004
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/may2004/ash-m28.shtml
The ostensible purpose of the extraordinary press conference held Wednesday by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller was to alert the American people to the danger of an imminent terrorist attack. But neither of the two officials could cite a single piece of evidence to substantiate their claim that such an attack was in the offing, or even explain why they had called the press conference in the first place.

Ashcroft began by declaring that “credible intelligence from multiple sources” indicated that “Al Qaeda plans to attempt an attack on the United States in the next few months”. He and Mueller pointed to next month’s G-8 summit in Georgia and this summer’s Democratic and Republican conventions as possible targets. But they failed to cite a single specific source for their conclusion that an attack was highly likely. They acknowledged, under questioning from reporters, that they had no idea where, when or how the attack would be launched.

They gave out the names and displayed photos of seven individuals who, they asserted, were linked to Al Qaeda and involved in plots against the American homeland. But, they had to admit, they did not know whether any of these people were currently in the US. In fact, they had no knowledge of the whereabouts of any of the seven. Nor did they, in Mueller’s words, “have any reason at this time to believe that they are working in concert”.

US authorities had publicly released the names of six of the alleged terrorists months ago. The only new name was that of a 25-year-old US citizen—Adam Yahiye Gadahn, aka Adam Pearlman—who reportedly was raised in California and converted to Islam. But when asked by a reporter for more details about the alleged Al Qaeda operative, both Ashcroft and Mueller were at a loss.

Reporter: “When did he convert to Islam, by whom, where did he grow up in the US?”

Ashcroft: “I cannot. But it may be that the director wants to provide more information.”

Mueller: “The West Coast, grew up on the West Coast, converted to Islam fairly—in his youth. And that’s about as far as I can go right now.”

Even more astonishing was Mueller’s response to a query about possible criminal charges against Gadahn.

“We would evaluate the evidence to determine whether or not charges are appropriate,” he replied.

In other words, the Justice Department and FBI had called a press conference to urge all Americans to be on the lookout for Gadahn and the other six, who Ashcroft described as armed and dangerous, but lacked sufficient evidence to even charge the 25-year-old with a crime!

3. Ashcroft-Muller-Ridge-bush*
Just finished watching this video:

A CBS Video That Basically Proves that the Ashcroft Terror Announcement Was a Thrown Together Political Diversion
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/videoplayer/newVid/framesource2.html?clip=/media/2004/05/27/video620064.rm&sec=201&vidId=201&title=Qaeda$@$Alert$@$A$@$Shock&hitboxMLC=national

more than a diversion -- it's an indictment of bush*'s incompetency

in the video: Ashcroft and Mueller are stressing "terra terra terra"

Meanwhile, Ridge is down playing "terra terra terra"

the news reporter has implied that this latest terralert is based on a power-grab by Ashcroft to get control over homeland insecurity

ok, here's the bush* incompetency part -- it was reported that bush* asked Ridge and Ashcroft if they were working from the same page...

:wtf: isn't bush* paying attention during all these "morning briefings"? Why isn't his "MBA-style leadership" efficient enough to make sure information is being shared between department heads?

more importantly -- did bush* even know that Ashcroft and Mueller were going to make a "booga-booga terra terra terra" announcement?

4. So then...Gadahn's crime was converting to Islam?
Edited on Fri May-28-04 04:40 AM by Q
- Ashcroft and this whole criminal admin. would be forced to resign or go to jail if the free press were still alive in America. In fact...we should blame the media as much as the Bushies for allowing them to get away with this without any kind of scrutiny.

- The media has much more power than they're putting into play. CBS did a nice piece...but there's never any followup. The point should be driven home that the Bush* administration is PLAYING POLITICS with terror...hoping enough terror and talk about influencing elections will scare people into 'staying the course'.

5. This all seems odd to me.
We can be sure the terrorist will be back as Bush has them all in a buss world wide now. If they did not like us before we have done nothing to help that. To drive them even more under ground and world wide, is sure to have them turn up here.If this is a war on terror, which is silly, we have been at it all of history. This has always been a way for people with no power to try and get it. Now Bush has sort of put any one that is not going with him a terrorists. It is all very odd. We do not even know if the terrorist did a thing to the election in Spain as the people of Spain did not like the war from the start only the Govt. did. We also see now what we gave them and what it cost them.

6. No, his crime was being obsessed with demonic heavy metal music.
I suspect that's what put him among Ashcroft's most wanted:

The only new suspect identified today was Gadahn, the former Californian, who according to an essay he apparently wrote in 1995 for a Web site, was once 'obsessed with demonic Heavy Metal music' before converting to Islam. 'Having been around Muslims in my formative years, I knew well that they were not the bloodthirsty, barbaric terrorists that the news media and the televangelists paint them to be,' he wrote.
