DU response needed to editorial in Chicago Trib!
Okay, so it was published last week. I still think that we need to respond to this:

Kerry service unimpressive

By Neal Thompson
Published May 23, 2004

John Kerry will run for president this fall on the Democratic ticket, and nothing is more crucial to his carefully crafted image than his status as a "Vietnam veteran." Kerry himself tells us time and again that his Vietnam experience, from fighting sailor to anti-war activist, factors greatly in who he is and how he will act as president. And on this I believe him, which is why, as a veteran, I will not support him.

1. Write back....
...that Kerry raises his military service largely in order to contrast himself with Bush. Review Bush's "service" to his country (apparently, he had to do public service in order to get out of some criminal charge in TX when he was young, but that' not the same thing).

Say the Kerry was a person who was given a great deal in life, and from the start he wanted to give back to society. Bush has been a person who has taken a great deal from society without giving, and even now, as president, the first time in his life that he has served his country (the TX gov's job was only part time -- the leg met every other year) he's still taking from people who don't have much and giving to people to whom a great deal has always been given, people like him.

Get the picture?

Contrast Kerry to Bush.

3. Try this too
Say how Kerry did his duty and believed in the US. But he could not stand sending people to fight in a war that did not have a good ending and was driving them crazy out in the field. He was doing his patriotic duty even though it was not popular. He was more of a hero for that.
