So, I just flew in from Kansas City...
Actually, that's a lie, I flew in Wednesday but doesn't harm my story at all.

Anyway, I am sitting at the bar adjacent to my gate at KC International reading, "The Greatest Silence is Sedition." Half a dozen stools down a middle aged male executive in a suit gets up to catch his flight and asks the middle aged nicely dressed possible executive female "how is the book?" I notice she is reading "Plan of Attack." She says it's very enlightening, he replies that he just finished Richard Clarke's book and it was great and he's getting Woodward's next.

On my trip the previous month the guy next to me on the plane was reading Molly Ivins' "Bushwacked" as I had my "Lying Liars" out.

This is middle america, folks. Each and every one upper middle class white folks. Just wanted to share some interesting observations.

The tide is turning.

4. They own the Newspapers and TV broadcast networks
we own the book publishers.

A clip from the rough intro to my next book:

===

Two years ago, I wrote my first book. It was called ‘The Greatest Sedition Is Silence,’ and it was a big ball of self-righteous horseshit with a lot of good facts to support the quivering, purplish prose. I wrote it in the months after September 11, 2001. It was about the attack itself, the data behind that day which never gets reported by the fraud we laughingly call the ‘news media’ here in America, and Enron, and the tax cuts, and the PATRIOT Act, and George W. Bush’s incredibly fake Christianity, and the need to rise up, rise up! against everything that has so clearly gone haywire in this country. I finished it at 3:00 a.m. one morning in July 2002 on the front porch of my mother’s little log cabin in New Hampshire by the light of a lantern I found in the closet.

It was OK for a first try, but after a thousand radio interviews and ten dozen public appearances, I learned something important: Make the book titles easy to remember. If I had a nickel for every time some talk show host or TV personality or event MC said, “And here now is William Rivers Pitt, author of ‘Silence is the Sedition Which is the Greatest’” or “And here now is William Rivers Pitt, author of ‘Sedition is the Greatest Silence of Sedition’” or some permutation of same, I’d have a whole hell of a lot of nickels.

12. I read that whole intro when you posted it
and yes, I thought it was a bit, um, wordy. (quivering, purplish prose? well, ummm.... no comment.)

But I bought the damn thing and respect the hell out of your essays and know you "get it."

Still, it

16. LOL (blush)
Sorry Will, I do know the name of the book, a brief attack of the dubya dyslexia I guess! Can't edit it now or the previous posts won't make sense.

Here's a Buffalo Head nickel for ya!

18. If you were the only one who'd done it
perhaps you'd have cause to blush. As it is, you're in august company. Amy Goodman butchered the title perhaps worse than anyone I've heard, so don't sweat it.

19. Damn, now I blew it twice
I should have played it cool like I intended to get it wrong, having read your new book intro and hearing Amt Goodman butchering it...

14. "You've been had."
Well, at least 50% of America has. Someone needs to write a book directed at the fundies. Informative and not insulting. You'd be good at that type of thing Will.

6. I thought you were going to say
and boy, my arms are tired! Seriously, I have been having lots of conversations lately with folks about where to get a Kerry bumpersticker (I have one). I tell them to send JK cash and get one for themselves! I do think people are beginning to wake up and that the tide is turning. I always ask "Can you imagine where the US will be after another 4 years of Bush?" Produces a look of absolute horror every single time!

15. But, that's the point
Edited on Fri May-28-04 04:17 PM by steviet_2003
In my 6 trips to KC over the last 6 months, I have not seen a coulter or hannity book in anyones hands, it's either been novels or truth tellers. I am an observer and love people watching, didn't see a single RW book at O'Hare or KC.

I don't fly alot so I am not an expert but I do watch. Besides, with a copy of the "sedition is The greatest Form of Silencing" in your hands, what else is there to do?

(another nickel for Will!)

and on edit: just joking about the book, it is chock filled with facts and your usual fascinating insight.

That's why I only fly from San Diego to Los Angeles. That's not so hard on my arms.
