How can we get Kerry to dust off the anti trust laws?
Edited on Fri May-28-04 10:44 PM by DaveSZ
We need for Kerry to roll back some of these huge monopolies (especially in the media) in order to save our country.

Clinton's signing the Telecom Deregulation Act of 1996 was one of the worst things he ever did (among other things).

Perhaps if Kerry were to pick Eliot Spitzer as his attorney general?

That guy is one tough mofo when it comes to corporate corruption.

1. Wait until he gets elected
and then start the campaign for the roll back. If he were to start talking about that now, the media would take him for sure.

2. Once he gets elected
Kerry needs to study up on TR now, my personal hero. I don't care if he was a Republican/Populist, he was the greatest monopoly breaker upper and environmentalist in American history.

Do people realize that TR wrote close to 30 books?

Study up now Kerry before you are too entrenched in the chaos you may soon encounter!

3. Depends on which one
I had a rather long post actually demonstrating Clinton was pretty vigorous about many anti-trust laws a couple weeks ago...part of the problem is case law as well...Brunswick VS Pueblo Bowling Alley redefined many anti-trust issues....the most important thing is moving forward with the international anti-trust laws Clinotn passed..geven that we are in a global rather than national economy, many of the issues that existed in the past needed to be reconsidered.

4. That's one of the better questions ever asked here
it's not just the media companies we need to go after- competition has declined to the point of oligarchy in so many markets that it's adversely affecting many segments of the economy and making it very difficult for smaller, or more local businesses (or farms) to make a living.

5. the gov't is now trying to overthrow organic famers
Is this good? I don't think so, especially for the organic farmers. What can we the people do other than write to the Senators for our states?

I am highly disgusted. Just wait, they'll push the organic labels for all through before Nov. just to make sure a mark is left.

Damn them.

9. thanks for the link!
Luckily I shop at the stores that came up when I ran a search. I don't go to Safeway and shop anymore. :puke:

Organic dairy products are terrific. I tried going back to the stuff you buy at the grocery stores and the taste was rancid. :puke:

7. I think Spitzer is angling for the NY governorship
It's something we definitely need to work for, but if he campaigns on it, the media are not going to be friendly about it.

Kerry needs the corporate media to win, but perhaps the grassroots can persuade Kerry to do the right thing once he's in office.

P.S. I agree TR was awesome except for his foreign policy.

10. at least TR was highly intelligent and creative
that is what we need now - a creative mind that is willing to take on the future. We need insight and devotion to the cause.

11. We also need

Purely publicly funded elections and a return of the Fairness Doctrine to the FCC.

The anti-trust laws can't be dusted off until candidates no longer have to rely on campaign contributions and spend most of their time raising money.

You can't dust off anti-trust laws when campaigns depend on contributions and the biggest monopolies can make the biggest contributions.

12. It';s one of the issues he's AWOL on
I agree. The monopolization of the economy ougght to be a key issue in the political campaign.

It is at the root of so much that is wrong today. Many people understand it in their guts, but there is no leadership to articulate it in the political sphere.

This is an area where the centrist democrats have been AWOL on for too long. So far kerry has been AWOL on it too.

13. What we need and what he does may end up being 2 different things...
Until he becomes Pres, we have no choice but to vote for him.

Worse case scenario is that Kerry is another repig-enabler.

14. It worries me
It worries me that Kerry will tow the DLC corporate fascist line instead of listening to the people who will vote for him - we the people.

15. It doesn't worry me

I'm already resigned to it.

What worries me is how they're gonna blame Nader this time.
