What was up with Letterman last night?
It was all military.

He started off by saying he was a little pissed off at CBS.

Then he has the sailors of ships INCLUDING THE USS HALIBURTON come on stage for somethign.

Then, later, the "Is this anything" segment was just a bunch of marines on stage.

So, this is the price CBS makes you pay if you criticize Bush?

1. Fleet Week
It's Fleet Week and we're going into Memorial Day weekend. Seems rather apt to pay a little homage to the Navy and Marines.

3. Oh, right. He does that every year.
Hope those sailors were listening to the Bush jokes.

4. Thanks for reminding me!
I live in a big Navy community, I come from a "military" family, and I forgot entirely about it!

2. Nothin' special
Letterman, like most of us, appreciate and support the members of our military. Having the sailors of the USS Haliburton on stage may have been an ironic touch, but the sailors themselves deserve our thanks. As for the Marines, well, you gotta give Uncle Sam's Misgodded Children* their props, too, since they pretty much volunteer to turn themselves into corpses when the shit hits the fan.

Don't blame the warriors, blame the chickenhawks who use them for their own, craven profit.

--bkl
* Traditional "explanation" of what USMC means.
Misgodded = passive participle of "march into Hell"

5. It was nice to see them, I was just wondering why they were there.
especially this week after some really funny Bush jokes, and after the comment about friction with CBS.

10. Is there really a USS Halliburton?
If so, how f*ckin' sick. Read that at first and thought the name itself sounded like a Letterman-esque spoof. Surely there isn't a Naval ship named after Halliburton - and if there is one named as such... time to ask a question I had never before contemplated... what is the process for naming Naval ships?

17. Homonym. There's a USS Haliburton. There's no USS Halliburton.
And I presume it's Halliburton that Dick Cheney currently works for.

22. It's actually the USS Halyburton...
FFG 40 (Guided Missile Frigate)

About the Ship’s Name, about Pharmacist's Mate Second Class William David Halyburton, Jr.:
USS HALYBURTON is named for the late Pharmacist's Mate Second Class William David Halyburton, Jr. , USN. A native of Canton, North Carolina, he was a graduate of New Hanover High School, Wilmington, North Carolina. His enrollment at Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina, where he planned to prepare himself for the ministry, was put aside to go into the service.
His citation is as follows:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepedity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with a Marine Rifle Company in the 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, during action against the enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima in the Ryukyu Chain on 10 May 1945. Undaunted by the deadly accuracy of Japanese counterfire as his unit pushed the attack through a strategically important draw and up the hill into an open fireswept field where the Company advance squad was suddenly pinned down under a terrific concentration of mortar, machinegun, and sniper fire with resultant severe casualties. Moving steadily forward despite the enemy's merciless barrage, he reached the wounded Marine who lay farthest away and was rendering first aid when his patient was struck for the second time by a Japanese bullet. Instantly placing himself in the direct line of fire, he shielded the fallen fighter with his own body and staunchly continued his ministrations although constantly menaced by the slashing fury of shrapnel and bullets falling at his sides. Alert, determined, and completely unselfish in his concern for the helpless Marine, he persevered in his efforts until he himself sustained mortal wounds and collapsed, heroically sacrificing himself that his comrade might live. By his outstanding valor and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of tremendous odds, Petty Officer Halyburton sustained and enhanced the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country."

Nothing to do with Cheney's company.

Haele

6. He does respect the people
in the military, especially the people who are sacrificing a lot to serve in Afganistan and Iraq.
He spent the last two Christmases visiting the troops there.

7. What is the friction with CBS?
And there really is a USS Halliburton? A ship named after a company?

8. He didn't say what friction was. Darryl Hammond was on too, btw
telling his jokes insulting Democrats (another reason I wondered what was going on).

And, yes, there is a USS Haliburton.

12. Halliburton vs. Haliburton
Just a co-inky-dink.

Here's another funny coincidence: the nuclear "football," the thing that is always near the President with the launch codes? Made by a company called Zero Halliburton.

14. Not after the company, good joke from Dave!
It's a guided missile frigate but it's spelled Haliburton. Must be somebody's last name...

I don't think it's going to happen, though. Dave has a conscience. He's a good man.

21. Letterman is doing alot to help Kerry's cause
You can tell my his Bush segments - he characterizes him as the biggest moron in history. Nearly every night he plays a segment with Bush speaking like an idiot and has no comments because none
are needed.
