Americans Tired of Abuse Photos
Was anyone on DU aware of this poll???

Americans Tired of Abuse Photos
By MARTHA IRVINE

CHICAGO (AP) - It has been all but impossible to miss the widely circulated photos of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners, which set off an all-out media blitz. And there are more images that have yet to be made public. But when is enough enough?

A recent CBS News poll found that while 55 percent of respondents said the prison abuse scandal is ``very serious'' problem, 61 percent felt the media has spent too much time on coverage, compared with 49 percent who said the same shortly after the news broke in late April.

-snip-
Several college students near Chicago bucked the national poll, fervently calling for more, or all, the photos to be made public.

``I think people are too afraid to confront what's going on beyond their coffee and muffin,'' DeSoucey said as she sat outside the Unicorn Cafe in Evanston, Ill., with her sheep dog, Mickey. ``Maybe it's just the conspiracy theorist in me, but I think there's a reason they're being hidden.''

1. We are *tired* of the abuse pictures??
Edited on Sat May-29-04 12:59 PM by shance
Id wager the Iraqis are a little *tired* of being tortured and killed.

Sometimes its embarassing to be an American these days.

4. I want ALL the photos and videos
to come out NOW..It appears there's some kind of hold up on the pix/videos being released..Time to start yelling loud and clear that we don't want it hidden, that the people has the right to these pix..We can't let the upperpukes get away w/ this by dumping the blame on the reservists. Since the people aren't saying and doing anything for the release of all the pix/videos, they're trying to get away with it and slip this under the rug.

5. Hmm? And yet they're not tired of 12 years of "Blame Bill" (Clinton)
stories.

In "the home of the brave," consensual blow jobs are worse than rape, torture and murder.

7. Has CNN tried asking that same question about other news topics?

Has CNN tried asking that same question about other news topics?

How many people think there is too much coverage of the Laci Peterson murder?

Unless they compare the answer to other news-topics, the poll is meaningless.

9. Abuse fatigue? Is that an airborne contagion?

"Others - no matter their opinion of the war - have had enough and are experiencing what you might call `abuse fatigue'."

10. What they really don't like is....
...having their noses rubbed in the reality of the ugly side of what we are doing. It momentarily disturbed the blinders they insist on wearing.

13. Don't Give a Damn
about what we do to those non-Xtians is more like it. If these pictures come out it won't matter, the Fundies will defend this Xtian rape. Yes our fighting men and women are just working so hard for our freedom.

"She claimed she had been raped 17 times in one day by Iraqi police in the presence of American soldiers," said Iman Khamas, head of the IOWC, adding the victim had allegedly been rendered unconscious for 58 hours.

And another group, the Iraq-based Union of Detainees and Prisoners, has told of a mother of four, arrested in December, who killed herself after being raped by US guards in front of her husband at Abu Ghraib.

According to the group's head Daham al-Mohammed, the woman's sister who helped in the suicide told of how the woman had been taken into a cell where she saw her husband attached to bars. A US soldier reportedly held her by the hair to force her to look at her husband while he stripped her, then raped her."

14. I'm not.
I'm tired of the media swallowing Rumsfeld's "I'm not going to use the torture word" line, and referring to the torture as "abuse". I'm tired of the administration continually dodging its clear and pervasive responsibility for this torture. I'm really tired of various Right Wing idiots, e.g. Limbaugh and Hannity, saying that this torture "wasn't that bad".

But the photos? No, not tired of those at all. In fact, I would be pleased if the media would talk about them, and show them, more often.
