The oddest way to make a living
Someone on another post alluded to the fact that Tucker Carlson's job is less than, shall we say, honorable? That got me to thinking about the shills and whores who innundate the media patronizing what is obviously the worst administration in the history of the planet.

I left broadcasting after 25 years because of the crap in the industry. Even though I have suffered financially since, I couldn't imagine going through what many of today's broadcasters have to do in order to support themselves and their families.

Watching some of the talking heads spewing their idiocy is amazing to me. I don't know if these people underwent hypnosis in order to continue their ruse, but they must believe some of what they say. Perhaps, that's even more pitiful.

Since Vatican II (sorry, I digress), I have been continually forced to engage my brain cells to the extent that it becomes more difficult to deceive myself.

Obviously, you've met people on the street that made you wonder how they got their underwear on correctly that day. I guess the level of that type of moron goes right on up the food chain.

Maybe, just maybe, (stretching a whole lot here) I can see how someone like Limbaugh can justify his self-delusion by virtue (or, more accurately, the lack thereof) of the size of his paycheck. But some of these local right wing yokels right on up to the network people who aren't making a small fortune amaze me with what they do.

I have more respect for aluminum siding salesmen than I do for most of today's talking heads. (my apologies to you if you happen to sell aluminum siding)

Randi Rhodes once said something that hit home with me. She said that she once got out of radio due to her integrity. These days it must be even more challenging to quality people like her.

Have a nice Easter!

Stew

1. I've never been a journalist
but I've wondered how the talking heads can sleep at night. I know they are aware of nefarious administration policies, yet they say nothing.

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:

2. Welcome to DU!
Jesse Helms got his start as a local right-wing radio host. That just goes to show....

3. Stew, it's like this...
there's always going to be some guy running around capitalizing on the stupidity of others. And there'll always be someone who wants Rush or Bill O'Reilly to succeed - it helps get their message out.

And it used to be these guys would be brought down by scandal - such as Jim Bakker going to jail for screwing people out of their fortunes.

Maybe Rush knows his gravy train won't last forever (even though he survived his scandal) and because of this he screams louder than ever.

Our only hope is that someone with decency will take the reins of a leading news organization and cause the others to follow suit. With the advent of new FCC regulations over corporate media and ownership - this is less than likely, it's still something to hold onto. And maybe the next president or congress will push for tighter regulations in this area.

5. Limbaugh
The drugs Rush Limbaugh is accused of abusing are legal only with a doctor's prescription. All are habit-forming.
Hydrocodone
Anti-cough agent and painkiller similar to morphine. Side effects include anxiety, POOR MENTAL PERFOMANCE, emotional dependence, drowsiness, mood changes, difficulty breathing and ITCHINESS.

Claim: Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh was disqualified from the Vietnam-era draft due to a pilonidal cyst.
Status: True.
http://www.snopes.com/military/limbaugh.htm

What are the symptoms?
Pilonidal disease often has no symptoms. If the cyst becomes infected, you may have redness or swelling near the top of the crease of your buttocks, cloudy fluid or blood draining from the cyst, and sometimes difficulty walking or sitting because of pain from the area of the cyst.

How is it diagnosed?
Pilonidal disease is diagnosed by your health professional after visually examining the area around the crease in the buttocks. No other tests are usually needed.

How is a pilonidal cyst treated?
Treatment consists of antibiotics if the area is infected. After the infection is cleared, a day surgery procedure to remove the cyst is performed. The cyst may be a simple abscess or may be draining from sinus tracts that need to be closed. The process of raising the borders of the emptied cyst and stitching them to form a pouch is called marsupialization. ...

I guess that is how Rush got his kangaroo court credentials.
And now, a Public Service Announcement.

May is Pilonidal Cyst Awareness Month!

:toast: Way back when, I was tapped to take a job with United Artists in their P.R. department. I did this "risk/benefit" assessment... The BENEFIT was financial "security" and the RISK was having to LIE for my daily bread. I cancelled the interview.

It's an individual decision. I play music, as I was trained to do at the most venerable institution in the world. NONE of my colleagues have the backround or skills that I possess. I've watched through tears and years as the incompetent have been promoted. My physical appearance makes me an "outsider." I have MANY talents and am often pressed to use them in service of others (something I am able to do with joy when I believe in what they are "selling,") but my bottom line in choosing to remain true to my heart and cherish the gift I've been given even at GREAT personal expense is that by playing music I can NEVER injure ANYONE. If my work displeases you, press the "off" button or leave the room. My dad was a doctor and I was expected to follow in his footsteps. He told me as a child about the oath he took. DO NO HARM.

I enjoy a certain "protected" status where I now live, in a country that still recognizes the value of creative endeavor. I deal with the stress of indigence (BAP that I am ;-)) and can look in the mirror each day KNOWING my heartfelt goal of uplifting the human spirit is the MOST IMPORTANT THING in my life. "Success" or "failure" in today's convoluted terms is irrelevant.
