Al Gore speech (lexcerpts and link to full text)

Al Gore spoke of the importance of "the rule of law and our carefully constructed system of checks and balance," to a New York City audience on May 26, 2004, at an event sponsored by MoveOn.

Gore said that George W Bush has shown "utter contempt for the rule of law and work(ed) at every turn to frustrate accountability," but that John Kerry will "retrieve our national honor as soon as this long national nightmare is over."

Gore also said, "What happened at the prison, it is now clear, was not the result of random acts by 'a few bad apples,' it was the natural consequence of the Bush Administration policy that has dismantled those wise constraints and has made war on America's checks and balances."
