You haven't heard the worst of abu-Ghraib
Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 10:12 PM by TreasonousBastard
Rick Perlstein quotes Seymour Hirsch:

"He said that after he broke Abu Ghraib people are coming out of the woodwork to tell him this stuff. He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, "You haven't begun to see evil..." then trailed off. He said, 'horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run.'

He looked frightened."

And it gets worse...

7. I want to know
why SY HERSH was looking afraid.

When someone like him looks afraid, we are in serious trouble.

Or did I misunderstood something here?
Was he the one who was looking afraid? or what else, I'm starting to get afraid by myself!

16. Me too...
and this is just a blog reporting what someone else said he heard Hirsch say. Hearsay.

Perhaps the reality is not as bad as all that, but I don't hold out all that much hope.

We are supposed to be the good guys, but somehow we have descended into Hell. And those responsible for this demonic contract will probably never pay for their crimes.

11. More Pictures
I'm torn about having more pictures come out. If they do it means the Administration will court Martial more E-4's and below, and what purpose do they really serve?

however, on the other side.. Memos are coming out where the people who are now federal appeals court judges are telling the president "you can do whatever the hell you want, screw the law" and there is no uproar like when the abu-graib pictures came out.

17. No one knows about the memo but us
You have to remember, the memo came out just as RR was being "honored". We have had 7 days of Reagan and no news channel has really covered anything else but RR. Even today, after all the rites, the news gurus were carrying on about him. None of them had the courage to include in their coverage Ronnie's slam to weed boy.

Once the news gurus start reporting again (I hope Monday they will start paying attention) then maybe the memo stories will be reported. I don't want to believe it can be as bad as this makes it sound, but in 2000 I would have never thought things could be as bad as they are.

abuse of teen boys and women detainees. Shootings of animals, animal sex etc. hadn't heard of baby rape yet. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez!!

BTW, what in hell were women doing in jail? What were women and their babies doing in jail? What the hell is going on in our military/government?

(Did you hear the bit about the Pope thinking * might be the anti christ?) Holy cow!

What do we have here folks? I'm not a death penalty proponent but I can think of a "gang" who so justly deserves it at this point, fercrissake!!!

22. Thanks, I had not read that.
How do you suppose the Pope felt when * was asking him to get his cardinals and bishops in line over here. He was asking the Pope to get make the U.S. clergy enforce the Churches position on anti-gays, anti-abortion. I bet the Pope was really praying during that meeting.

19. I don't think there is any "baby rape"
Sy Hersh doesn't allege any "baby rape", just "horrible things" being done to women and children which might include things like rape, murder and torture or scaring kids with leashed dogs.

23. Concerning how the women came to be guests in our prison(s)
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 02:29 AM by JudiLyn
Here's an article a DU'er posted recently which will relate the conditions of Iraqii women in several of our prisons, including Abu Ghraib:
....there remain extremely troubling questions as to why these women came to be here. Like other Iraqi prisoners, all five are classified as "security detainees" - a term invented by the Bush administration to justify the indefinite detention of prisoners without charge or legal access, as part of the war on terror. US military officials will only say that they are suspected of "anti-coalition activities".

Two of the women are the wives of high-ranking and absconding Ba'ath party members; two are accused of financing the resistance; and one allegedly had a relationship with the former head of Iraq's secret police, the Mukhabarat. The women, in their 40s and 50s, come from Kirkuk and Baghdad; none has seen their families or children since their arrest earlier this year.

According to Swadi, who managed to visit Abu Ghraib in late March, the allegations against the women are "absurd". "One of them is supposed to be the mistress of the former director of the Mukhabarat. In fact, she's a widow who used to own a small shop. She also worked as a taxi driver, ferrying children to and from kindergarten. If she really had a relationship with the director of the Mukhabarat, she would scarcely be running a kiosk. These are baseless charges," she adds angrily. "She is the only person who can provide for her children."

The women appear to have been arrested in violation of international law - not because of anything they have done, but merely because of who they are married to, and their potential intelligence value. US officials have previously acknowledged detaining Iraqi women in the hope of convincing male relatives to provide information; when US soldiers raid a house and fail to find a male suspect, they will frequently take away his wife or daughter instead.

ON edit:

Just found a great article by Sidney Blumenthal, which brings info. you may not have read yet. By the way, did you know it was that pompous, swaggering religious idiot Gen.Boykin who advocated using gas at Waco? (Janet Reno bore the brunt of that one.) I had no idea he was there. He has been involved in "gitmo-izing" Abu Ghraib:

Opinion: The religious warrior of Abu Ghraib (20 May 04)

An evangelical US general played a pivotal role in Iraqi prison reform.
