Bush Asked for Vatican's Help on Political Issues
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/13/politics/13george.html

The example of a 'cultural issue' is gay marriage. But we all know what the real cultural issue is - Roe v. Wade. This article might as well say - 'Bush promises that if elected, Roe v. Wade is history'.

"Citing an unnamed Vatican official, Mr. Allen wrote: "Bush said, 'Not all the American bishops are with me' on the cultural issues. The implication was that he hoped the Vatican would nudge them toward more explicit activism.""

"Mr. Allen wrote that others in the meeting confirmed that the president had pledged aggressive efforts "on the cultural front, especially the battle against gay marriage, and asked for the Vatican's help in encouraging the U.S. bishops to be more outspoken.""

1. Geez, this doesn't sound legal.
It sounds like conspiracy. The Pope isn't even an American!

3. I saw this on DU last night. Hate and prejudice make strange bed-fellows.
I am glad I quit the Catholic church when I was 13. I believe in my own version of God, not in one created by men to increase their power and spread their prejudices.

4. I've only now realized that I'm ready to let go.
altogether. I guess that makes me a non-denominational Christian.

5. Surprised NOT
I would have been surprised long ago, but nothing about this group surprises me anymore. Here we have one of the most powerful religious people in the world talking to an ass about influencing an election. I'm sure the ass asked "Popey boy" to help out in ending the wars in the ME. We must vote this ass out of office. I fear for my country.

6. Pope thinks he is the anti christ
This same publication had an article about the Pope thinking * might be the anti christ, I bet the Pope was praying very hard during that meeting and I would go further and say that the Vatican will not make a public stance relative to the communion issue now. GW shoots himself in the foot all the time. Thanks GW.

See this link that provides link the anti christ discussion.

8. This will further alienate his Fundamentalist Christian base....
They don't like Catholics either, in spite of them being fellow Christians.
