NOW w/ Bill Moyers - Pentagon undercounting actual troop casualty #s, more
This week on NOW:
http://www.pbs.org/now/thisweek/index.html

Thousands of injured and ill soldiers sent home from Iraq and Afghanistan are not being counted in the Pentagon's official tally of the wounded because they are considered "non-hostile" casualties. Some say that if they were included, it would triple the total casualty count. The Pentagon claims that until NOW's request, it hadn't been asked for those numbers. But, critics say these often debilitating injuries are not being reported to keep Americans from getting a clear picture of the human cost of war. NOW's Michele Mitchell profiles these soldiers who may spend the rest of their lives scarred and disabled, but whose sacrifices are not being counted by the nation they served.

The government of Sudan has been blamed for tens of thousands of deaths and for driving out more than a million villagers from western Sudan. Amid continued reports of rape, massacre and torture, the UN has called the crisis one of the world's worst. As the rainy season bogs down the already beleaguered delivery of relief supplies, government experts are projecting that an additional 300,000 to 1 million people there may die. Is it already too late to do anything to stop what some are calling genocide? NOW gets the on-the-ground perspective of veteran journalist Julie Flint, who recently returned from the region where she was on a fact-finding mission for Human Rights Watch (HRW). On Tuesday, Flint testified on the HRW's behalf in front of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. David Brancaccio sits down with Flint to discuss her findings and what she thinks the UN, the US and other countries should be doing.

Many young Black and Hispanic voters will go to the polls for the first time this November, and political analysts on both sides are trying to figure out what will motivate them. Some are looking to The Hip Hop Political Conference for answers. The convention, being held in Newark, NJ this week, will attempt to mobilize this new generation of voters. Among the speakers is Michael Eric Dyson, a University of Pennsylvania professor, cultural critic, and Baptist minister who has been described by the WASHINGTON POST as belonging to "a group of young intellectuals who may yet define our view of Black American culture as did their predecessors Ralph Ellison and Albert Murray." Dyson will speak to the conference on the great divide between his father's civil rights generation, represented by Martin Luther King, and today's younger generation, represented by Tupac Shakur. David Brancaccio talks to Dyson about his ideas to bridge the divide between those two generations.

10. Further...
The wounded who were removed from the theater and subsequently died. According to statistics*, nearly 2% of wounded die later. So you're looking at 200-350 additional deaths.

*Iirc, the wounded, removed within an hour, have a survivability rate of 98%. Another untold story.

11. Yes. Did you see the number of deaths?
938 (or was it 932?). Up quite a bit from the number that we have seen reported in the news. This show made me screaming-out-loud furious.

12. West coaster...haven't seen it yet.
My guess is the number is already over a 1,000. My outrage began at 1.

(Maybe Reaganpalooza won't pre-empt NOW until 11:30p like it did last week...a great show)

The thing that really mad me screaming nuts tonight was the Pentagoon Doc that said that auto accidents happen all the time, too. (Among other obnoxious platitudes.)

14. For the Black and Hispanic part..... HipHop, etc.
I remember not too long ago there was a post asking if Black voters might be lost to the Democratic Party. this section of NOW spoke to that, and YES, there is dissatisfaction within the population of Black voters that the have been taken for granted for too long, and their issues not addressed. The speaker (whose name I've already forgotten) spoke about losing voters by not appealing to this segment.

He specifically said that Kerry would have been well served to have gone to the hip hop convention and addressed these young people. He said that ignoring them showed he was more interested in image than substance.

In the thread that was posted, that idea was pooh-poohed, yet......... Here is a Black man saying that the Party better start smelling the roses. Some of us have been saying this for quite a while......... the Dems are ignoring their traditional constituents, and it is to their peril.

It's interesting to me that this part of the NOW program hasn't been commented on here.

Are the DEMS listening?

17. Yes this was good, too.
Sorry I didn't mention it before, brain fade here. There was a woman on Majority report tonight, too, a delegate from the HipHop Convention that is taking place now in Newark, NJ. She said the same thing as the guy on NOW said, that the Dems better go after these voters and soon. They're both right. The Dems can't count on just the pissed-off base and the usual "every time" voters. They need to go after the people that feel that no matter who gets elected, they get nothing.

19. Glad you saw that, and on Majority report, also
I know that every time I've brought this up on DU, I've been booed for my efforts. People in poverty, of all races, have been ignored, and still are, and they've mostly dropped out, too. As I feel like doing. NOT ONE CANDIDATE ADDRESSING THIS!

Why bother............

21. Thank you Kool Kitty!! I've lost hope the Dems, even here,
are ever again going to hear that. That's what the DEMs *USED* to stand for, and that's why the Party blossomed, and enjoyed a period of strong growth. It obviously no longer matters to the Party as a whole.

I wish I had that quote from the woman you heard......... so many people won't hear of *anything* unless you can put it in writing for them.

Oh well, the resistance is so strong it probably wouldn't matter much if I could quote it verbatim, complete with 10,000 links.

Thanks......I really appreciate what you've contributed to this.
