Canadian DUers: Need Advice
Yesterday my Canadian friend called and asked me (an American) who she should vote for in the election.

She's in the Westmount-Ville Marie riding, which the Liberals are going to win in a landslide anyways.

So I'm seeking advice on which party.
Conservatives-NO! Steven Harper's on my shit list
Bloc-NO! Quebec secession makes no sense
Liberals-Too corrupt, but I don't want Harper in any sort of position of power.
NDP-This is who I'm leaning towards urging her to vote for.
Greens-Wasted Vote?

Opinions?

1. options for Westmount Ville Marie
Excluding the Liberal, Con-servative, and NDP,
3 other candidates are on the ballot for that riding:

the green party -Brian Sarwer Foner

Marijuana party -David John Proctor

Marxist Leninist party- Serge Lachapelle

So far, the Marijuana party has the best campaign slogan:

"Let's Roll"

Hope that helps.

2. Interesting question!

If she isn't wanting to vote Liberal and is positive that the riding will go Liberal then she should vote her conscience. She should check and see what the platforms are for the parties, all of them, and then vote. The key, imo, is to ensure that the faux Conservatives don't gain by the Liberals losing a seat by her vote.

Edited to add: I live in an Alliance (faux Conservative riding) so am planning to vote strategically. My heart is Liberal but my head will vote for whichever candidate has the BEST chance in beating our current rep.

3. Thanks to election finance reform,
every vote is now worth $$$ to a party for a claim on public funding next election. More than ever, no vote is wasted. That might be an argument for her to research the parties, discover which best reflects her conscience, and vote accordingly.

And yes, this is a very safe Liberal seat. The only question is who will be a distant second place.

One thing I'd say: if she's attracted to the Green Party because of its apparent environmental credentials, this week both the Sierra Club of Canada and Greenpeace gave the NDP's environmental platform higher marks.
