Some People Still Don't Want You To See My Movie... From Michael Moore
Edited on Sat Jun-19-04 12:58 PM by mzmolly

June 17, 2004

Friends,

We're a week away from the nationwide opening of "Fahrenheit 9/11" and not a day goes by where we don't have some new battle to fight thanks to those who are still working overtime to keep people from seeing this film. What's their problem? Are they worried about something?

A Republican PR firm has formed a fake grassroots front group called "Move America Forward" to harass and intimidate theater owners into not showing "Fahrenheit 9/11." These are the same people who successfully badgered CBS into canceling the Reagan mini-series a few months ago. And they are spending a ton of money this week to threaten movie theaters who even think about showing our movie.

As of this morning, a little over 500 theaters have agreed to show the movie beginning next Friday, June 25. There are three national/regional theater chains who, as of today, have not booked the movie in their theaters. One theater owner in Illinois has reported receiving death threats.

The right wing usually wins these battles. Their basic belief system is built on censorship, repression, and keeping people ignorant. They want to limit or snuff out any debate or dissension. They also don't like pets and are mean to small children. Too many of them are named "Fred."

This new nut group is the Right's last hope in limiting how many people can see this movie. All of their other efforts have failed.

2. Mr. Moore really knows how to sell his movie
This is an important film. That said, MM could make PT Barnum blush.

I have my own opinions and I do not need to be told what to do. I am not a Dittohead who can be played like this.

4. It would be helpful to know which chains have definitely NOT booked F11,
before firing off a bunch of letters.

I know for a fact that one of the Landmark theaters in Minneapolis HAS booked F911, a bunch of us already have our tickets for opening day next Friday.

I would certainly be writing a different kind of letter to a chain that HAS booked the movie (like a big THANK YOU!), as opposed to a chain that had NOT (like, WHY AREN'T YOU SHOWING IT?).

I don't have time right now to do the research, but I hope you or somebody will. It would ill serve us to fire off angry letters to a company that ought to be congratulated instead.

9. That's good,
although I still think it would be preferable to be able to send a "Thank you, way to go!" letter to the ones that HAVE booked F911.

Just me, I guess...

I DO appreciate and support this effort in any case.

36. Here's another sample letter
Don't use it verbatim, though :)

Dear Sirs,

It has been brought to my attention that a well funded organization is coordinating an email campaign to get your theater to refuse to show Michal Moore's "Farenheit 9/11".

Not having seen it yet, I find myself compelled to ask that you show the movie in your area so that myself and other interested parties may see the movie and make up our own minds about the content.

If you bow to the "astroturf" (a faked "grass-roots" letter writing campaign) of the monied interests that are trying to censor this important documentary, you do your customers a disservice but most important, you lead our great country into the same murky waters that smother the film industry in China and destroyed the movie industry in the Soviet Union.

I ask you to stand up for the right of the people of America to see any film they want to see, and allow your company to rake in the cash bonanza that would no doubt come from showing a movie with this much pent-up demand. It's the American way.

(Your name here)

P.S. If the people engaged in the astroturf campaign don't like the movie, they can just not go see it. It's as simple as that.

7. Very Good
But here in ole PA (my private slice of hell) I'm less concerned with theaters not showing this film than with the local gestapo maniacs that will position themselves in front of the theater doors to block entry and thus the insuing riot.

Anybody else see this as a concern ?

12. It was in the news a few days ago, and posted on DU
here's the original article

<snip>

Late last week, a right-wing group began an Internet campaign encouraging consumers to put pressure on exhibs not to screen the film. One independent theater owner in Illinois, Skip Huston, said that after booking the movie, he has received death threats.

"I was a little worried when I was getting phone calls and e-mails calling me a Nazi, Commie pig," Huston told Daily Variety. "But things started turning around on Saturday and the support emails are now coming in at 150-to-1 in favor of showing the movie."

<snip>

and here's the DU thread about it

13. Move America Forward: "only 417 theaters will show this film"
'...and most of them are art-house theaters."

This doesn't seem right to me--my local Cinemark, which shows nothing but mainstream movies will be showing it, as will the Malco Tupelo Commons in Elvis's home town of Tupelo, Mississippi. I also kind of doubt that the "Malco Tupelo Commons" is an art house theater.

Edited on Sat Jun-19-04 04:43 PM by cease_fire
Could someone put all of the contact email address for the movie theaters into some sort of contact file that's easily read by outlook or outlook express?

What I'm finding is that if we can make this kind of e-Activism easier for the less computer savvy, they are just as willing to spend the 5 minutes to generate an email.

Any takers? Can we post the file somewhere so folks can download it and send their own email and insert ALL of the email addresses into the BCC field?

The display software here on DU corrupts email addresses like these, but I've done a few cut and paste's and almost all of them will work with the exception of the few that DU's software spoils with broken formatting.

Pick out one to send the message "To:" and BCC all the rest so that they don't know who else you sent the message to... besides, it's just rude to broadcast everyone's email messages in the "To:" header.

Just swipe the whole block and paste it into the BCC field of an email message. Outlook will format it correctly.

Here's some text files that bypass DU's formatting problems... Just click on the link and cut and paste.

Fucking right wing assholes.

They resort to these types of gestapo tactics and the left rolls over and lets them.

This is why I don't consider myself a Dem, however I will send letters in support of free speech.

43. I know the guy who owns one of the theaters this movie is playing at
He AIN'T gonna cave into anything. He always shows liberal/left-leaning films and hosts events for progressive causes.

Great guy.

For those in the Long Island/NY area, I urge you to visit the Cinema Arts Center in Huntington.

46. Gotta thank Move America Foward
For that list of e-mails so I could write to all the theaters letting them know how much I wanted to see this film. Luckily Regal Cinemas who I frequent most for mainstream movies because of their high quality projection and sound is gladly showing this at my favorite theater. Hopefully I will encounter some protesters to yell at Wed night :D

52. A big kick
I e-mailed thanks to every one. One of them (Little Theater) responded with the First Amendment - it was great!

We must keep the pressure on. One of my local theaters isn't making a decision until Tuesday. I will call back with a complaint about censorship if they decide not to. It's a Regal theater, which is on this list, so I'm even more mad.

53. If you go to the f9/11 website
you will see a dramatic increase in the number of theatres that are going to be showing the movie! Thank god!

Moore should also get the DVD out by September and have a televised broadcast by late October. He should also show it for free in Central Park on August 29th in NYC.

55. Strange website
Most sites have a link to contact them, either by filling out a form or just giving the email addy. This one has nothing at all, just a form to sign-up for, something. They want people to give them their contact info but are not willing to put theirs up on their own website. I think they are intensely paranoid. Go figure.
