Of the Gipper, the flag, the 4th of July, and the Dork

The vicissitudes of the calendar and the randomness of the arrival of the Grim Reaper have conspired to spotlight our fearless leader for three days in a row early next month.

Ronald Reagan slipped this mortal coil on June 5. Under our flag laws, ex-presidents are honored for 30 days after their death. By my reckoning, that means July 4 will -- barring another presidential death or tragic event -- be the final half-staff day. Thus, the incumbent president can milk it for all it's worth, reminding us again on July 4 of his valiant predecessor, then, at sunrise on the 5th (which, because the 4th is a Sunday, will mark the actual official day of celebration), hoisting the red-white-and-blue to full throttle for the first time in a month from either his Crawford pig farm or the manse in Kennebunkport that his grandfather should have willed to a worthy cause rather than pass it -- along with the other family wealth -- to the next two generations.

On the 6th, it's W's birthday.

Kerry is such a class act by comparison. I hope we get debates this season. Won't that be a lovely contrast.
