Garrison Keillor called Bush admin. liars...
Edited on Sat Jun-19-04 10:42 PM by skooooo
...today during his Lake Wobegon segment on NPR.

He cleverly worded it, of course, referring to the "fathers" (because of Father's Day) in the "highest circles of our nation" who were telling the most fantastic lies to their "children". It was clearly a political statement, and was taken as such by the reaction of the audience.

I posted something about this earlier, but didn't get much response. Personally, I think it's pretty remarkable for Keillor to be so outspoken, even if it was in a rather artful way.

1. It's about time...
... somebody started calling them what they actually are--the press won't do it.

2. thanks for clarifying.
I heard this also, but I wasn't paying very close attention to what Keillor was saying. I heard hism say something about fathers not lying to their children and someone from the audience shouted out "yeah" or something like that. I figured there was some double meaning to it. Good for him!!

This show repeats on sunday afternoon, so I'll try to catch it again.

3. Wow, Keillor is usually more low-key on his show than that...
Remarkable is right. Will have to catch the repeat tomorrow. Thanks for (re)posting!

4. Yeah, it gave me a chill...

...coming from the mild-mannered Garrison. Do listen, it's a classic.

5. Will my local station pull the show?

They don't like to air anything that might offend big corporate advertisers. Pretty soon it will be nothing but Marketplace, Car Talk, A Way With Words, and classical music.

6. Then I suggest you write, call and let them know you appreciated
the program, and the clarity of the issue.

Get your friends, neighbors, relatives and everyone you can to do the same.

Written letters to your local station will have big impact.

7. I'm working with Garrison tomorrow in Saratoga, CA as audio engineer.
He's bringing his 'Hopeful Gospel Quartet' road show to an outdoor venue called Villa Montalvo.

I'm responsible for the sound system he'll use while his mix engineer Sam Hudson spins the knobs.

I can't wait to meet him. He is a bard for our day. I intend to ask him to keep up the anti-neocon heat on his show and keep the Schwarzengroper in the crosshairs, too.

Big day tomorrow.

8. he spoke out last week, too
....saying something like "America was the people went to escape torture. If it has become a nation that tortures, then the world is lost." Longer than that, and I'm paraphrasing. He was quite, quite distressed. There was a LOT of cheering and clapping.
