6. What is a "millionaire"?
Is it some one who has a million dollars worth of total assets? Or someone with a yearly income of a million dollars?

9. ...that's a great question.
Plenty of people with middle class type jobs retire with a million dollars in assets, and still need to clip coupons.

17. nobody with a million dollars in assets needs to clip coupons
if they couldn't sell their asset for a million dollars - enough to live on in the US for life - their assets aren't worth a million dollars are they?

In any case, houses can easily cost a quarter or half a million dollars in California, and most people's assets are their house and that's it. Upper middle class people who have nice houses are still middle class.

When the left makes class arguments sometimes it's like Dr. Evil asking for a 10 million dollar ransom :)

25. Out of curiosity, where would you live for that million?
Not in Maryland, unless you go out real far west here, maybe not even then.

18. I've heard $5 million in hard, easily salable assets
Five million is supposedly the point at which if something really bad happens to you, you'll be able to pay it off without relying on insurance, etc., and still have a million dollars left.

If your millions are all in securities, the term "on paper" is always added--you could be worth ten million or ten cents tomorrow morning if everything is securities or options. Especially if it's options--which are only a contract that will let you purchase securities at a certain price.

I would apply "on paper" to real estate holdings. They're worse than junk bonds in some ways--ask the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

11. Whether millionaires are created or not at any rate
doesn't matter. It matters how many people are lifted out of poverty. Millionaire creation isn't a negative. The lack of people getting out of poverty is.

14. Probably, a better question is how much is a million dollars...
And its really not that much money. It is a house, a couple of cars, some nice personal effects and about enough money to retire on for 20 years. I find is darn depressing that so few people are looking at basically a middle class life anymore. Really? Only one in 130 is middle class?

22. Methinks you make it up, new poster
So, your children go to college for free because they are hispanic? What program would that be on, my friend? Everyone has to fill out the financial forms, no matter what their minority status. They would see your supposed wealth and charge you tuition, period.

I don't know anything about contracting, but I do know about college tuition. I think you are making it up. The only thing I could imagine being close is that your children got scholarships for high academic achievement that are aimed at minorites. But I seriously doubt they went for free simply by virtue of being hispanic.

24. Really?
Would you care to provide links to the programs you used that could allow other immigrants to benefit in the same way you have?

Golly, it sure sounds like the U.S.A. is just handing out money!

How do the rest of us take advantage of this great system?

If you can't, I will find it hard to believe since I am not familiar with these programs, and have never heard about anything like that.( I noticed you seem to be Cuban. I know there are a lot of perks for Cubans, but not for hispanics in general.)

I know you want to help others, show us how it's done.

"And because we are hispanic, my four children all got a free ride at college even though I could afford to pay."

How did you do this? I thought college assistance was based on either a scholarship, or a grant or loan which is based on the ability to pay. How did you get this free education for your kids?

You could help a lot of people by answering this.

And because we are hispanic, my four children all got a free ride at college even though I could afford to pay.

...rip off the system, and take it away from people who truly need it, when you can bloody well afford it?

20. You have to be a billionaire to be rich anymore.
A million dollars in assets is pretty obtainable in today's money. I mean if you own your home and some stocks and bonds, it isn't that hard for it to amount to a million or so.

23. Read the other day that there are about 2.5 million "Millionaires" here.
In the US of A.

The story cited a study that used the criteria that a "Millionaire was one with assets over one millon dollars not including primary residence.

30. Right now...
...I really wish I was. But for crying out loud, I have been working four weeks, and haven't been bloody well paid yet. And the way it is going it looks like I am gonna have to quit this job, find another one, and begin legal proceedings in order to get what is owed to me. So I don't think I have any chance of becoming a millionaire anytime soon. :(

31. schools
my children had fairly decent grades--the girls were B average and the boys were a little below that. They all got full scholarships directly from their universities (not federal government $$) because the schools competed to get them for diversity.

My youngest is the only one still in school--she is at a private university in Hawaii. They were very anxious to get her--she has good grades 3.2 average and decent SATs (a little above average), the way they ended up funding her school was by giving her a golf scholarship! My daughter had never played golf in her life!!! But that was how they were able to do the money--they wanted her for diversity. You have to be very clever about these things! And they knew that I had plenty of money they didn't care--they just wanted a quality diverse student body. So instead of paying for her school, I bought her a little Jaguar car to drive while in school! I am a great dad.

Not my fault if others do not work the system to get what they can. I am not apologetic at all--my family has had lots of suffering and I deserve some help. Our family buisness IS done through the federal government and we follow every rule that is set down for us. It is MEANT for minority people to get ahead. I support this and want the same for others. I believe that NO ONE should have to pay for school. So I want more programs to help others. Yes I have been lucky and blessed--but I want everyone to be blessed like me. Even those who are not minorities, but I hope the minorities get theirs first because they have been left out of the American Dream for so long.

Thank you America!!! And Especially Thanks to the President Carter--President Carter let my family come to this country from the pain of Cuba. And it was the high interest rates during his presidency that made me my first million!!! at that time I had just a little money and I lived with family and I put the money in the bank and let it gather interest!!! I have always been a lucky man--very sad for those with big debt instead to pay the interest rate. But for someone who has money--the high rates mean I earn lots of money quickly!!! Then--I had lots to invest in business and Carter made rules for minority contractor more liberal! He gave me financial start. And freedom. I want everyone to have that opportunity.
