Kerry Tests Waters on Vacation in Posh Nantucket
NANTUCKET, Mass. (Reuters) - Sometimes a vacation is just a vacation, even if you're Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and you spend the weekend boating, dining out and searching for just the right wind to kite surf in one of America's most exclusive summer playgrounds.

If there were any political implications in two days on Nantucket, the Massachusetts senator simply didn't care, aides said on Sunday. It was his first visit to the island since March when he clinched the right to challenge Republican President Bush in the Nov. 2 election.

"Let Kerry be Kerry," spokesman David Wade said. "He's been doing this for years.... He loves to be out on the water."

In 1996, former President Bill Clinton's image makers declared nearby Martha's Vineyard too elitist after White House pollster Dick Morris took a survey on where he should go on holiday.

2. I live on the coast and have yet to go sailing
One of these days I really want to do it, on one of those cool old windjammers.

3. Another question - why are you posting so many anti-Kerry articles?
Again, just curious.

5. Because that is what is being featured in the news
I post them whether they are positive or negative.

I do think it is too bad that the press is working so hard to make Kerry look bad this week.

On the other hand, all they can come up with is a sailing trip and a check from a felon. Doesn't look so bad compared to: * having lied about 9/11 and STILL lying about it.

7. Oh, I see.
That's what's being featured.

Then I guess these are the most important stories to discuss.

4. Link's not working but
it looks like Reuters covered his vacation much more sensibly than the AP (the infamous Nedra Pickler).

6. I don't know why some of the links from that site work
and others don't. Annoying because the rest of the articles are worth checking out.

8. His family (Forbes clan) has been on the Cape
for over 100 years. In some circles Nantucket, the Vineyard and the Cape aren't "elite" so much as just where one goes in the summer.

If he went *anywhere* this summer it would be dissected and judged to either be "elitist" or "pandering"

Personally, I hope the guy is having one hell of a good time.

9. Kerry vacationing in "enemy" territory...
... lotsa GOPers on Nantucket, and let's not forget Richard Mellon Scaife owns a home there.

in fact, the last time I vacationed on Nantucket, I was at one point sitting on the beach not five yards from Rick Lazio. Say what you want about his politics (heck, I'll say it -- they're regressive, shallow and just plain wacky), he knows good beach when he sees it. And his kids are terrific and smart -- so much so that they're sure to be liberals once they hit college.

11. I have never been to Nantucket

although there are a lot of "there once was a girl from Nanctucket" things around

But it cannot be that much more "posh" than Kennebunkport.

See, in Kennebunkport they try to pretend they are not posh. It is trendy to try to look "common"

Actually the Walker compound estate, is very poor looking.

13. True, but it's not like they wear tuxes all day in Nantucket

I think he's looking good -- and goodness knows the man deserves a vacation. He's been working hard out there -- I'm amazed at his stamina.

14. and even on vacation he meets with people
he doesn't close himself off to the public.he likes to get out there and be with the people and is willing to do things he does during regular campaigning like take pictures and sign autographs. people are so used to politicians just doing things like playing golf. but some of the golf courses and clubs they are a part of is far more elitist and exclusionary than anything kerry does.

15. It's all perspective
Even Woods Hole is kind of exclusive now, but to me it's just the town I lived in as a child. Nantucket and the Vinyard were nothing special in those days.

So, Kerry goes where he feels at home when he vacations. Why not?
