Katrina Leung- High Profile GOP Fundraiser & Chinese Double Agent
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 05:44 PM by cryingshame
This is from May 9th. How soon this story disappeared.

However, since the mediawhores want to allege that "Kerry took money from a Korean" maybe we should investigate this more.

Authorities suspect Leung was a "double agent" who routinely stole secret U.S. national defense documents and handed them to China's Ministry of State Security, its intelligence service.

Leung was a high profile Republican Party Activist.

She was fucking with an FBI Agent named Smith who participated in the VRWC that tried to catch Clinton taking money from Chinese.

This story dropped like a rock - yet it's the biggest spy scandal since Aldrich Ames.

7. Leung Was At Junior's Inaugural
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 05:42 PM by cryingshame
Behind the headlines, there is plenty of discomfiture all around. It is yet another monumental embarrassment for the FBI and the Republican Party in the United States, whose leaders for years delivered blistering accusations of treason against the Democratic administration of president Bill Clinton for allegedly giving away state and military secrets to the Chinese.

Now, it appears, if the charges against Leung are true, it was a highly placed Republican giving away the secrets, and FBI agents who were witting or unwitting participants. Certainly, with a Republican administration in power in Washington, DC, federal authorities and congressional leaders have gone inordinately quiet, to Democratic glee...

Leung and her husband emigrated from China to San Marino, once a nearly all-white, extremely wealthy, conservative enclave of Los Angeles. Since the early 1990s, it has increasingly filled up with wealthy Chinese, particularly those betting against a benign takeover of Hong Kong in 1997 by the Chinese government. She describes herself as a "venture capitalist" and owns a bookstore, Monterey Books and Stationers, in nearby Monterey Park. She rose quickly to the top of Los Angeles Republican ranks, giving lavish parties at her US$2 million home, which is flanked by four stone lions and features two swimming pools. A US congressman named her to the California State Republican Central Committee.
Leung was spotted at the inaugural ball of President George W Bush.

Leung was more than just a spy and counterspy. She appears to have been a fixer in China as well for individuals and companies seeking guanxi with Chinese leaders. In an affidavit filed in Los Angeles in the case, the Canadian telecommunications company Nortel indicated it had paid her a $1.2 million commission for her services. US government documents indicate she maintained 16 foreign bank accounts in Hong Kong and China. Making countless trips to China, she operated a variety of companies in Hong Kong under names such as "Right Fortune" and "Merry Glory".

She accompanied former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan to China seeking a multimillion-dollar contract to get the Chinese to use Los Angeles' underutilized seaport. With her help, Riordan met with Chinese president Jiang Zemin. She also sought to aid current Los Angeles Mayor Kenneth Hahn on a recent trade mission to China.

snip

Leung, now 49, allegedly carried on a relationship for 20 years with Smith, the FBI's top expert on Chinese Counterintelligence in Los Angeles until his retirement in 2000. Smith had been warned a full 12 years earlier by William Cleveland, his superior, that wiretaps indicated Leung might be a double agent. Smith defended her. Cleveland apparently decided to check for himself and ended up in bed with her, according to affidavits made available to Asia Times Online.

snip

Interestingly enough, neither she nor Smith is charged with espionage, which carries the death penalty. She is instead charged with unauthorized possession of documents relating to national defense and two counts of copying documents connected with the S national defense with reason to believe that they would be used to the benefit of another country. "We are still investigating," said a spokesman for the US Attorney's office in Los Angeles.

8. From Josh Marshall On Leung Scandal:
Now we have an actual Chinese spy--charged, though not convicted--who by all
indications was funneling money into U.S. campaigns. Her treachery is an intelligence
failure that comes on the heels of others tied to similar shortcomings at the FBI, and one
in which vital secrets were given to a power, China, which these same Republicans were
saying two years ago posed the greatest threat to the United States. And yet we've not
had one hearing. Not one commission. There's been very little coverage in the press, nor
is anyone yakking about it on talk radio.

The Republicans didn't create the problems at the FBI. But they've sat on their hands
and put politics ahead of the national interest as the scope of the problem and the cost to
national security have become increasingly apparent. Not only have they ignored the
problem, they have actively sought to shield the FBI from the one reform that almost
everyone agrees would make such breaches of national security secrets far less likely.
That's not just politics as usual. It's not even garden-variety political hypocrisy. It's a
betrayal of the public trust.

9. GOP/Leung May Have Set Up Clinton & Gore
Links to sources at Talk Left:

1. An "old Friend" of William Simon, "Republican candidate for Governor of California,"

2. A donater to Richard Riordan's campaign for Governor in her role as "Secretary" of National Association of Chinese Americans, (apparently, she also travelled with him to China)

3. A contributer as an individual at the "Benefactor" level (the highest level, I think) to The National Committee on United States-China Relations which includes Gerald Ford, Robert S. Macnamara, David Gergen, and Tom Kean amongst its many luminaries. These are, of course, major players in both parties but primarily Republican.

According to TAPPED, a bit over $4000 of her own money has been traced to Republican causes. There may be more as well as in-kind contributions such as hosting fundraisers.

The GOP and Leung SET UP CLINTON & GORE:

"But if you put the ChiCom and the Republican finance stories together, you get this: Katrina Leung, a Republican Party activist, acknowledged FBI informant, and alleged double agent for China, was apparently trying to lure a Chinese citizen to the United States in order to advance a probe into illegal campaign finance contributions aimed primarily at democratic national candidates,
especially Clinton and Gore. Her FBI handler and lover James J. Smith was also involved in FBi investigations in this issue.

(It's probably coincidence but also troubling that Louis Freeh, a world-class Clinton-hater, was in charge of the FBI at that time.) The whole thing seems very, very weird, in the way Watergate looked very weird in the early days of that scandal. And there is already much more smoke than there ever was during Whitewater.

10. The GOP and FBI have similar MO's

I was just reading about Leung in Rosemary Dew's book, "No Backup: Battling Kidnappers, Terrorists, and the Destructive Culture that Handcuffs the Bureau."

Dew is a former FBI supervisor who writes about the way the FBI protects its good ol' white boys no matter what they do, but has no respect for females and minorities. This attitude permitted moles within the FBI to commit espionage for years without anyone questioning them, and protected male agents who were violent criminals. The GOP is has the same endemic ethical problems. Unless we take back Congress, electing Kerry won't permit investigation or the bringing to justice of any right wing criminals or traitors. And unless we can get rid of a lot of right wing judges, there will never be any convictions of wingnuts, no matter how heinous their crimes.

I can just picture Bush being brought up on charges related to lying about Iraq: The case reaches SCOTUS and Scalia and Clarence co-author an opinion that he is innocent because to decide otherwise might damage his credibility. Sheesh.
