The Big Blackout:Political Winners and Losers

In Michigan, the two big winners are Governor Jennifer Granholm and Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Granholm, who already had approval ratings in the 70s, handled her first crisis deftly. She marshalled the resources of the state government promptly and efficiently, and was a steady voice of reassurance trough out the situation.

Kilpatrick's "can-do" attitude was a real boost to the city and to everyone in the area. When DTE announced that they were going to turn on every one else's water before Detroit's, he used the clout of his control of the regions water to smarten them up in a hurry. And he was right on top of nailing CNN for spreading their racist bullshit about looting in the city.

since the blackouts will put more focus on energy and conservation and will inevitably lead to Bush and Cheney's cozy relationship with big oil. Also Bush's dismissal of the blackouts as a "domestic issue" should be made to haunt him.
