Ashcroft strikes again -- going after group for taking medicine into Iraq
Here's the situation:
The US Justice Department has sued Voices in the Wilderness to try to collect a fine of $20,000 from VitW for bringing medicines to the people of Iraq. Over the past seven years, Voices in the Wilderness has organized more than 65 delegations to Iraq made up of teachers, veterans, social workers, artists, health care professionals, trades people and people of faith. Many of these delegates carried symbolic amounts of medicine as an act of civil disobedience against the injustice of the economic sanctions; they then returned to the United States to tell about the brutalizing effects of the sanctions, magnified by the US bombing of the Iraqi civilian infrastructure during the Gulf War.

What you can do to help:
VitW calls for 20,000 or more citizens of the world to raise their voices in outrage against the injustice and hypocrisy of this lawsuit. Join your voices with ours as we call upon the Justice Department to drop their lawsuit against Voices in the Wilderness and instead direct their money towards the humanitarian efforts of NGOs working in Iraq, the clean-up of the hundreds of tons of depleted uranium now polluting Iraq from US weaponry, and the payment of reparations to the families of Iraqi victims of the US invasion and occupation.

2. Shouldn't Ashkkkroft be busy trying to find the anthrax killer?
Edited on Sun Aug-17-03 12:47 AM by NYC
instead of trying to fine people for taking medicine to people who need it?

5. I'm making a donation
to this organization today. Anyone else? This group has been around quite some time and has a solid reputation. They had sent a number of observers in during the escalation to war.

Or perhaps you would just want to sign the petition?

9. The hypocrisy of this lawsuit is breathtaking...
With Cheney as CEO, Halliburton used foreign subsidiaries to conduct business deals that allowed Saddam to rake in close to a billion dollars. Does the Justice Department go after Cheney or Halliburton? Of course not. Instead, they go after people who sought only to provide the people of Iraq with medicine.

And George W. Bush's America cares not one whit.

13. It is unfathomable
Where is the outrage? Instead of applauding this group's efforts, they were among the ones criticized heavily for "aiding and abetting the enemy" by providing human shields. I find that type of courage truly inspirational.

11. After donating to their cause I think someone should...
organize a tour group of dissidents to travel abroad to all countries with sanctions and travel bans taking a few items of relief with them.
