MEDICAL EXAMINER DISMISSED  
Starting July first, the Okaloosa/Walton medical examiner will be
out of the job he's held the last six years.

Dr. Michael Berkland has been dismissed by the Medical Examiner's
Office in Pensacola.

The Florida Medical Examiner's Commission had complained of his
failure to complete dozens of autopsy reports in 2001 and 2002, a
violation of state statutes.

Berkland says he performed some 320 autopsies last year and had, in
the past, asked for help from the Pensacola office to handle the
workload.
Chief Area Medical Examiner Dr. Gary Cumberland will temporarily take-
over Berkland's duties.
