Hypocratic oath or Presidential Oath?
When I was reading some posts on how nice it would be to have a doctor as president, I wondered if an emergency happened which oath would take presidence? Would the doctor have to stay and help the wounded as he was sworn to do in his hypocratic oath or would he get out of harms way and save the presidency as he would swear to do in his presidential oath?

1. I don't know the answer to the larger question

But I've seen a few swearing in cerimonies, and I don't remember them swearing to get out of harm's way. I don't know enough about the Hypocratic oath to be able to answer your question though.

2. They swear to protect the presidency.
Which from what I've gathered is why they wisk the president to an undisclosed protected location in case of peril. Also that is why if the president goes under anesthesia he gives his power over to the VP.

3. No they don't swear to protect the presidency.

Here's the presidential oath of office in its entirety:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

There is no conflict between the Hippocratic Oath and the Presidential Oath.

Furthermore, no where in the Hippocratic Oath (classic OR modern version) does it say a doctor must "stay and help the wounded." Not all doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, either, since that customs varies from one medical school to the next. Here's a link with both forms of the Hippocratic Oath and some interesting commentary: http://www.geocities.com/everwild7/noharm.html

Again, there is no conflict between the Hippocratic Oath and the Presidential Oath.

On edit: Add Hippocratic Oath comments & link.

4. Well, I hate to trample on your idealism, but
not that many doctors take the Hippocratic Oath any more. It is regarded more as a standard to achieve rather than a vow. There would be no conflict.

5. OK, it was just a thought.
I didn't even know how to spell Hippocratic!
