Kerry just turned me way off...
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 08:58 PM by pjeffrey4444
with his oh so safe answer to Larry Kings question.."Have you seen Farenheit 911?" Ill support him, vote for him....try to change the things about him that Im not crazy about but this kind of pandering makes me gag.

Sorry, what he said was..."No, that he had been watching it all around him for the last 3 years" Very safe, very dismissive and very noncommital.

25. Great answer!
I am sure he saw F9/11. The answer he gives is the diplomatic answer and shows he is quick on his feet. It shows he endorses Moore's message without outright endorsing the movie. Aaaah... what else should I expect from such a seasoned politician. Kerry/Edwards are going to be so kick-ass come debate time! :D

So, if he did, then he lied on TV.

What is it that's making you seem completely incapable of understanding Kerry's response?

KERRY DOESN'T HAVE TO SEE THE FILM BECAUSE HE LIVED THROUGH THE ACTUAL EVENTS OVER THE LAST THREE TO FOUR YEARS!!!!!

Hellloooo, McFly!! Anybody home??

Holy crap, batman.

If you actually read my post, which I'm beginning to doubt, you would have noticed that what I was responding to was NOT, repeat NOT having to do with him saying he lived through it.

The poster said that Kerry *SAW* F911.

Kerry said he *DIDN'T* see F911.

So, is the poster calling Kerry a liar? Why would Kerry lie about whether he had seen the film?

Read what I said, rather that what you THINK I said.

Get it?

watch the film. He (and all of us) lived through it. That was very presidential. He doesn't need somebody else tell him what is wrong with this Administration. We all have eyes and ears. Only Bush supporters turn a blind eye to everything that is going wrong in this country and abroad.

Fahrenheit 911 is a great documentary. I've seen it. But I don't mind Kerry staying away from all of that until after he is President.

49. His answer was brilliant - he validated F911 as the reality of past 4 yrs
that he has witnessed (in contrast to considering F911 to be just Michael Moore's opinion or propaganda or fiction as Moore's detractors allege) He seemed dismissive because he cannot be seen as promoting the movie but his answer meant that he feels he has been in a position to already witness or know about the events shown in the movie- a validation of the truth of the movie I thought.

I think it best that he not align himself with Moore or say he is wonderful or whatever. We have to keep in mind he is trying to appeal to voters who are undecided or who think about supporting Bush but aren't too thrilled about him. Not everyone thinks like most people here. Appearing very "left" and leaving himself open to bashing from the right is not a good move. Let's get him elected first then worry about the rest. The goal is to get the Chimp out of office.

24. But, but, what if he in fact hasn't seen the movie?
He would just be telling the truth.

Yes, I sure do wish we had a more outspoken Democratic nominee, but it's not like he said a Reich wing talking point by calling the movie propaganda, or said he definitely wouldn't see the movie.

And can't the majority of us on DU say the same thing, that we've been watching what is in the movie all around us for the last three years? It's not like the movie provided us with new information we didn't already learn here.

I can't agree. I hate Kerry's hair more than I think this statement is him being safe, dismissive, and noncommital. Now, his statements about Israel, and his beliefs about life starting at conception, well, his hair becomes quite pleasing.....

26. Not only is the answer clever
(and obviously planned), but it also implies that everything in the movie is true.

Have you seen this movie?
Seen it? I've been living it.

That's the answer. it implies that the movie is an accurate depiction of the events. What's the problem? You want a yes or no? Why? What's the value of a yes or a no? How would either be a benefit? You call it "pandering." Most folks call it smart strategy. But then, it's just your opinion, after all. And you only get one vote.

any criticism is verboten. You must have forgotten where you were.

I didn't have the same problem as you did with the answer, but I find it ridiculous that your original post could be described as showing outrage or being over the top.

Just a few things that you might not be aware of that Kerry-Edwards have said in the past few days that lead me to believe that they won't be playing it safe:

Kerry gave a speech at a church where he railed about the blacks that were disenfranchised in the 2000 vote in Florida.

Just today he took it to Bush by claiming that Cheney has really been the acting President.

Also, he has taken the best parts of the message that each of our candidates used during the primaries. Just yesterday at a rally he said "John Edwards and I will never put our troops in harms way without telling Americans the truth about why they are going." I think you've probably heard that before.

but as you describe it, that is a GREAT answer.

Anyone at DU could have said the same thing. F911 is basically a recap of the past three years as seen by someone who was actually watching what was happening, rather than just watching the mainstream media.

Kerry's answer captures all that, while deftly sidestepping a big pile of bullshit that had been carefully placed for him to step in.

I liked the answer. Why get drawn into the whole Michael Moore controversy if he doesn't have to?

He swatted the question away, and did it well. Over and done.

I didn't think much of Kerry last fall. I thought he was a bland, boring and predictable politician. He has impressed me very much as of late. He has shown he is intelligent, quick with an answer, and not reading from a script. The fact that he is a bit stiff and calm can work to his advantage well, just like being down-to-earth and chummy worked for Bill Clinton. I'm convinced that Kerry is one of the best candidates the Dems have put up in the last 50 years. Up there with Clinton, JFK and LBJ.

but I liked his answer too, and I am a big Moore fan who's seen F9-11 two times, and is going to see it again tomorrow. He said it succinctly. He told the truth; for people who have been paying attention the last four years, the film is like a reality show. There wasn't anything new there. I think that's what he was saying. You have a right to your opinion, but from the way you were describing it, I thought he really said something offensive, like he didn't like Moore, or had trouble with the facts in the movie. Now THAT would make me mad.:hippie:

54. F911 is not targeted at the informed DU'ers, Kerry etc.
it is meant to create awareness and knowledge to key issues to the masses that are not engaged.

Like the ladies in the coffee line behind me today talking about things in the film they never realized and being shocked to the point of nearly walking out.

Kerry, Du'ers etc.. we're already aware, knowledgeable and bought into the need for change.

Anyway..that's the marketing strategy approach.

55. Also, am I crazy or have
little references to F9/11 been popping up in his speeches? Nothing major, but kind of wink to people that have seen the movie. Granted, some of these are just facts that happen to be in the movie, like when he mentioned the stolen votes in Florida and Bush's vacations, but today on Larry King he talked about how Bush said he would "smoke them out of their holes," and that seemed like too strange choice of words to use coincidentally.

As far as his answer goes, I agree with what everyone else has said. Well handled.

57. Sure he's watched it for the past fours years...
and has even encouraged it by:

NOT voting, as a semator while the CBC was begging for just ONE senator to sign their objection to the 2000 fuck up.

AND

Voted for the slaughter of Iraqi babies, children, women and old men.

How could kerry have said more? He was/is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

That was a HELL of a good answer! Don't you get it?? He said the same thing any of us could have said. We who have been paying attention all these years didn't need to see the film to be convinced. And apparently neither did he.

67. Maybe you're a Dean supporter?
When I read your comment, it took me back to the Hotel Fort Des Moines during the post-caucus celebration in Iowa.

A TV was broadcasting the "frothing mad speech" right outside the hall in which a bit later John Kerry was to give his victory speech.

Two or three dozen of us watched in awe, sharing one thought, "Dean just conceded the entire primary with that performance."

And of course that's exactly what he did.

Leave the kook-speak to the kooks -- like the two running the White House.

We have a couple of winners running now. And they are exting every bit the part.

Harvey Briggs.

By saying that he "lived" through it, he's saying that F 9/11 is all true. I think that's a very powerful statement.

"Very safe, very dismissive and very noncommital."

These are the kind of responses candidates give on controversial subjects-- this is why people hate politicians. You've been acquainted with Kerry's safe, noncommital style for some time now. Don't act surprised. Join the other DUers who can't stand Kerry and just pull the stupid lever for him and start planning protests against his administration after the inauguration.

73. I agree!
Rubbed me completely wrong. He did not need to say "I don't need to" in response to the question: are you planning to see it? He could have left it at I haven't had time but maybe down the road ...

But the I don't need to, I've been living it ... comment smacked of making a judgment without seeing it which is something the wingnuts and winger media have done ad nauseum. As you said, it was the pandering, dismissive and playing-it-safe comment. But there are ways to play it safe without the calculating slap at somone who's efforts have galvanized the base for Kerry and made necessary inroads into indys and repugs.

And if he has truly lived it for the past 3 years and knows what is shown (on top of his past knowledge of the Bushies via Iran-Contra), then why the fuck did he vote for IWR?! That STILL rankles me since his constituents voiced their opposition loud and clear; and at the time, he was 1st and foremost their senator. Had he heeded their calls and blast faxes, he'd now be in a strong position of being able to say he stood up for his constituents then the same way he'll stand up for the American people and BTW, THEY WERE RIGHT!

Incidentally, Edwards identical vote on IWR doesn't have quite the same impact because he WAS representing his constituency and because of his fewer years in the Senate and thereby (presumably) lesser knowledge of the Bushies.

For Kerry, I still say less is more. Keep the answers simple. Teresa was quite good, and she and Edwards help Kerry immensely.

on this sort of thing. He really does need to stay away from this sort of thing - it's up to us (the individual & press) to push the truth out there. He should be as positive as possible and let the Chimp throw bananas. If he slips on the peels, then he can retaliate.

88. On a non-political board that I frequent, the Kerry interview was
mentioned on a thread, and the people who saw it really liked the Kerrys, and his answer about seeing F 9/11 was mentioned in positive way.

So was Teresa's answer about how she changed her party affiliation after Cleland was smeared by the republicans.

FWIW.

I don't have a problem with that in the least. Larrry King's idiotic "questions" are a much bigger problem than Kerry giving facile answeres, IMO.
