Why Won't Bush Attend The NAACP Convention?

Is this considered a flip-flop? :silly:

"NAACP spokesman John White said Wednesday that Bush has declined invitations in each year of his presidency -- becoming the first president since Herbert Hoover not to attend an NAACP convention."

Bush declines NAACP invitation

10. Yep.
Given ANY other reason, this one trumps them all. If racists didn't vote, Kerry would win in a landslide... Though, I'm starting to think that Kerry will win no matter what special interest groups (KKK, X-tian Coalition, etc.) support the Shrub.

Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 12:38 AM by Sweetpea
If you have issues with them, you should post it. Show me links to the NAACP being crooks. The only crooked president to be fired was Ben Chavis and that was years ago. Besides that isn't the reason Bush isn't showing up. If he didn't want to have meetings with crooks, he couldn't go to any briefings with Cheney.

It's supposed to be a non-partisan organiztion.

It's chairman is a former Democratic congressman, and last election they ran the nastiest ad that any group ran against him.

Why would he give them his time?

He can always meet with a group of A-A business owners, or conservatives.

From Bushies view.

If one thing the Democrats can count on, its the black vote. The handful that vote Republican are hopeless anyway.

Best case that bush could hope for is to not be embarrassed.

51. Former Democratic congressman
from Baltimore.

Seriously, if we were his advisors would we recommend him speak to the NAACP?

I would recommend he speak at an A-A businessman's roundtable the same day.

Ther is absolutely nothing in it for him to give time or publicity to the NAACP, who will work tirelessly to get him canned regardlss of whether he speaks to them or not.

33. "Council of Conservative Citizens" - Bush courted them in 1999 campaign
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/daily/dec98/southern19.htm

Conservative Group Accused Of Ties to White Supremacists
By Thomas B. Edsall
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, December 19, 1998; Page A08

The Southern Poverty Law Center yesterday charged that the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), which has sponsored speeches by a number of prominent elected officials, is the "reincarnation of the infamous White Citizens Councils."

In a report called "Sharks in the Mainstream," the center contended that "many members" of the CCC have ties to the Ku Klux Klan and the National Association for the Advancement of White People, both "openly white supremacist organizations." The White Citizens Councils and the KKK were the two major Southern organizations opposed to desegregation. The councils attracted members from local businesses, Chambers of Commerce and country governments.

The CCC has hosted speeches by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Mississippi Gov. Kirk Fordice (R) and Rep. Robert L. Barr Jr. (R-Ga.).

"The CCC has tried for years to pass itself off as a respectable, mainstream organization," said Joe Roy, director of the center's Intelligence Project. "But the fact is that this group is shot through with white supremacist views, members and political positions."

The center provided material from the CCC's Web site that included a column by H. Millard, titled "Genocide and the Tan Everyman." Millard writes:

"Those elites pushing for this neo-melting pot should leave their fou fou dining rooms and talk to their chef who will probably tell them that you can't throw every ingredient into the pot or the recipe will be ruined and what will emerge will just be a slimy brown mass of glop. . . . The problem for white people is that since they're only 10 percent of the humans on Earth, they are going to have to struggle mightily to survive the Neo-Melting Pot and avoid being part of the brown glop." <more>

"We can have peace and security only as long as we band together to preserve that most priceless possession, our inheritance of European blood, only so long as we guard ourselves against ... dilution by foreign races."

Bush gave a speech to these hate-mongers? That is so sick.

50. Okay, I was wrong. It was the CNP, not the CCC
A different, secretive, reactionary organization. The CCC is associated with Trent Lott.

<snip>

In 1999, candidate George W. Bush spoke before a closed-press CNP session in San Antonio. His speech, contemporaneously described as a typical mid-campaign ministration to conservatives, was recorded on audio tape.

(Depending on whose account you believe, Bush promised to appoint only anti-abortion-rights judges to the Supreme Court, or he stuck to his campaign "strict constructionist" phrase. Or he took a tough stance against gays and lesbians, or maybe he didn't).

The media and center-left activist groups urged the group and Bush's presidential campaign to release the tape of his remarks. The CNP, citing its bylaws that restrict access to speeches, declined. So did the Bush campaign, citing the CNP.

Shortly thereafter, magisterial conservatives pronounced the allegedly moderate younger Bush fit for the mantle of Republican leadership.

The two events might not be connected. But since none of the participants would say what Bush said, the CNP's kingmaking role mushroomed in the mind's eye, at least to the Democratic National Committee, which urged release of the tapes.
