As part of the Chicago Bears team that won the 1985 Super Bowl, Dave Duerson is used to playing for keeps. And that's one of the reasons the former safety has no interest in stepping in for Republican U.S. Senate nominee Jack Ryan.
"I play to win," Duerson said. "I don't like to lose at anything."
Not only that, Duerson said he is backing Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
"My political philosophy leans more toward Democratic than Republican," Duerson said. "If anything, I'd be a conservative Democrat."
State GOP officials said the former NFL pro signaled his interest in replacing Ryan by faxing his resume to them Friday. But Saturday, Duerson told the Chicago Sun-Times he never submitted his name, saying anyone could have lifted his resume off his Web site and forwarded it to the party.
