Poll question: Yet another Poll: Your Favorite First Lady
So who was your favorite First Lady? and why? I left Laura Bush off the list because she is still in her incumbency. Also, regret to say I wanted a list to go back to Eleanor Roosevelt, so due to lack of space I also decided to take off one other first lady--this time I picked a Democratic first lady--Mrs. Truman, who didn't enjoy being first lady and kept a low profile. But if you wish to write in either Laura or Bess please do.

Cheers.

Oh, my choice is Betty Ford. I love Mrs. Roosevelt but I thought Betty was a very strong first lady too and I grew up during her time in office. She was outspoken in favor of the ERA and very pro-choice and didn't mind saying so. She gave a famous interview on 60 Minutes and said she would stand by her daughter if she had an abortion which caused a firestorm.

1. Eleanor!
Gotta love the "ugly duckling"

My Dad, a WWII vet and child of the depression, still loves her to this day.

I read a bio of her in elementary school when I was a child and my dream was to become a UN Ambassador like she was.

2. Eleanor! But You Should Add Abigail Adams to Your List.
Abigail Adams would be my second choice after Eleanor.

3. yes
we definitely need more space. Abigail Adams was a great first lady and I enjoyed reading about her in David McCullough's book on John Adams.

4. Great Bio, Huh?
Glad to see you are a fan of Abigail. :hi:

On the Fourth of July, I gave away a dozen of McCullough's book. One of the finest bios ever crafterd.

Next year, I'm giving away Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States.

:hi:

12. Loved the Adams bio...
We named our cat, adopted in New England, after Abigail Adams. What a remarkable woman (and the cat's pretty cool too). Although sometimes I wonder if part of my liking for her is because of Virginia Vestoff playing her in 1776...

Voted for Eleanor, by the way. Everything a First Lady, and indeed an American, should be. There's a wonderful statue of her on the West Side in NYC.

6. WTF is so great about Jackie Kennedy?
She was this stepford-wife bimbo who turned a blind eye while her husband fucked everything in sight.

You ever see her interviewed? She looks like she's doing a massive dose of Paxil. (they didn't have it back then but who knows what of JFK's drugs she might have been dipping into).

I really don't get the jackie worship.

9. Bimbo?
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 03:49 AM by Paschall
Ya know many bimbos who speak four languages or who decide to take jobs when they don't have to? Jackie may not have accomplished what Eleanor Roosevelt did, but as First Lady she gave the US a huge boost on the international stage. If she looked the other way while JFK played around, that was her prerogative, and was not so surprising from a woman of her elegance and class.

14. she saved Grand Central Station
OK, so it was after her first ladyhood, but so what? I liked her, she was a class act even if hubby was a tomcat. and he was a good president, even if he was a tomcat ( just like Bill)
