The way to end the Israeli-Palestinian war
And a war is what it is. However, it is a war where only one side has the traditional instruments of war. Hence, the suicide bombings.

The way to end the war is not through cease fires, where one side can continue doing as it pleases while the other side is supposed to stop all violence, or useless "road maps." These fail to recognize the asymmetry or imbalance between the combatants, i.e., the Israelis hold all the cards. What is needed is for Israel to withdraw from the west bank and gaza and temporarily turn control over to an international force, in return for the Palestinians agreeing to cease all violence. Then the parties can proceed to discuss a final settlement involving creation of a Palestinian state and a formal Palestinian declaration of the end of the conflict.

Until both sides are treated as equals, the violence will continue, and no settlement is possible.

1. Yeah but
I'm not saying this isn't a possible starting point--but exactly how are you going to stop the terrorist bombings? While some Terrorist groups might see this as positive, other groups want the whole thing--they want the Israelis out of there entirely--short of them gettting that, there will probably be a few who will continue the bombings.

7. Maybe
The big problem is that the Palestinian security forces 1.) are not particularly well-equipped or competent to begin with 2.) have been decimated by the IDF and 3.) are thoroughly corrupt.

An Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza Strip would end most of the terrorist attacks.

My hypothesis is that if the Palestinian security forces were purged of corruption and provided with better training and equipment, they could themselves contain the terrorists that remain.

The problem is that Israel will almost certainly manipulate this process (as well as other politial processes, like free elections in the Palestinian state, if they ever happen).

Another concern is the fact that Israel will inevitably retain a great deal of control over Palestinian travel and access to resources.

The more I study the conflict, the more I become convinced that a binational state is the only decent solution.

8. I agree
that a binational state is the "only decent solution." But, pragmatically, that's not likely to come about in the near future.

As for security, a NATO or some kind of international force would be put in place during the transition period.

3. I've long felt Jordan held the key
I think there needs to be the creation of a security zone between Israel and Palestine, a annexation of land from Jordan into the new Palestinian state, a dismantling of the newest settlements, a disarmament by the terrorist groups, and the turning over of Jerusalem to an international body that guarantees continued access to all parties.

You know. . . it's a nice simple plan.

4. no peace
sharone has vowed to never give up the settlements. the road map is just a ploy to say look we tried for peace but it didn't work. so we will go to war, and drive all the arabs out of isreal, which has always been the goal of the jews.

6. Israel can't withdraw from the West Bank and Gaza before talks begin
Take a look at a map.

It can withdraw from a lot of the territory, but not all of it.
