The "Prejudice" of Democrats
Anybody want to take a crack at this one?

Down in the gun dungeon, some of us are being excoriated as being bigots as virulent as noted racist Ted Nugent because we are less than sympathetic to a moron who built a home-made cannon to murder live frogs by using them as ammo....only to blind himself by peering down the barrel as the cannon went off and catching a luckless amphibian in the face.

Says one of his ardent defenders: "I think a REAL Democrat would refrain from passing judgment on others they don’t even know."

Whaddaya think?

1. I never get into Second Amendment arguments
Because one side never makes any sense!

Bigotry may come and go, but spotting a moran (sic) is timeless, and this assclown sounds like one of the first water. Real Boudelang material, there.

Hell...even with the "toad-related tragedy", this goof could be Secretary of the Ari Force with a Republican administration....

2. Tell the jackass
That bigotry is discrimination against someone for something that's part of their identity -- race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, etc. You can make a case that being a moron qualifies you for sympathy as mentally incompetent. More likely this kid is someone who tortures animals. Not exactly a protected class by US law.

You just watch! First they'll take our amphibians (and home-made cannons) and then they'll close the libraries early. Going after them frogs is the first step down a very slippery slope.

Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 07:15 PM by D__S
Then why was the article posted in J/PS to begin with?
If it was to point out the stupidity of the action, then it belonged in The Lounge or GD.
It had no relevance to the RKBA issue. I conceded that it might have some relevance to public safety,
but that wasn't why it was posted. You took the ball and ran here with it... Nugent, pantload,
white trash and all.

83. A few did...
Myself included. What relevancy does it have to the RKBA issue?
I could tell you about all sorts of stupid and dangerous things
I've done as a kid, and even a few as an adult. By your convoluted logic and sweeping statements, that makes me and probably a large number of other posters here "white trash" "yokels" or whatever it was you so eloquently observed about a simple case of adolescent stupidity.

FWIW, I've never shot an amphibian (or any other animal) from
a "spud gun"... I've never even *shot at* an animal nor do I have any desire to. I've never shot myself (or anyone else), in the face, arm, leg, chest or whatever appendage you can conjure up.

So, just a bit of safety advice from an experienced "gun loon": next time, keep the spud gun pointed away from your foot. :D

44. I don't think that's what their problem is
Just about everyone agrees ("RKBA enthusiasts" or not) that this kid did a VERY stupid (and disgusting - using a frog) thing.
The problem seems to be that some people are saying this is a perfect example of a a typical gun owner. In a round about way (or maybe not so round about), it sounds like you're saying anyone that owns a gun is stupid enough to do what this kid did. There are responsible gun owners out there - and there are some that aren't so responsible.
Just my 2 cents,
OP

Quote from other thread:
"Actually what it shows is that in addition to being dumb enough to shoot themselves in the face with a frog, RKBA "enthusiasts" are humorless prats"

63. Yes, I saw a few...
But I also noticed that none of them admitted to shooting themselves in the face with a frog. Not every RKBA enthusiast or spud gun owner is like this moron. Some people are wreckless in their car (but not everyone) - some people are wreckless with guns/spud guns (but not everyone).
I put these "cannons" (the PVC pipe kind) in the same category as fireworks. Personally, I think fireworks are more dangerous because they're less predictable. I made a spud gun when I was a younger, too. We shot potatoes out over a lake. They were so low velocity you had to hold it at a 45 degree angle to get any distance on it (mine rarely went over 150 feet). I never put anything except potatoes in it and agree sticking any living creature in it is twisted and cruel.
That being said, I have no sympathy for him either.

24. I think your opponent has a point
This kid injured himself in an accident. Was he doing something stupid? Yes! Was he doing something wrong? Possibly. But be a Mensch! Just because someone was doing something stupid or wrong doesn't mean that they deserve no sympathy whatsoever. It is unfortunate that this happened. And the quote is right. Other than the incident surrounding his blinding you know nothing about this kid, but yet you feel entitled to pronounce him "violent, dishonest and simple-minded white trash".

You are the one who brought this up, thinking that GD would support you in your enjoyment of this kid's misfortune. Since you brought it up, I told you that your enjoyment of this kid's misfortune is as sick as the boy's torturing animals. If you don't like the answer, don't ask. Further, you have not answered my question about why it is OK for you to delight in the blinding of a child. You complain about cruelty to animals on one hand, while attempting to dehumanize the kid on the other hand. Your actions are not indicative of a good Democrat or a good human being.

If any of my friends did something stupid like that I'd make fun of them to no end - I laughed at my friend when he rolled his jeep and flew out the top - (once I knew he wasn't dead). That's just the way some of us are - we can laugh when someone does something stupid and nothing too tragic comes of it. Some jackass who blinds himself by firing a frog into his eyes is nowhere near the top of the list of people around the world who deserve my sympathy. Would it have been nice to hear that he's expecting a full recovery? Yes. Am I going to loose any sleep over the fact that he isn't? No.

Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 07:54 PM by greatauntoftriplets
(Chicago Daily News and then the Chicago Tribune) used to do a yearly column about what he called something like "The Gun Idiot of the Year". In it, he cited the person who did the stupidest thing possible with a gun.

My favorite was the guy who thought he saw something moving at the foot of his bed in the middle of the night and shot it. It was his dick -- he had an erection. LOL.

47. Somewhere, Darwin is laughing.
The issue isn't guns, but intelligence--or lack thereof, in this case. I would be just as amused by a tree-hugging leftie who lost an arm trying to feed an abandoned shark.

50. Was this one of the Bush* clan?
I seem to recall hearing about Bush* putting firecrackers under frogs when he was young so I just assume this person was emulating his idol. We should run him for governor of California.

55. Yup...
But it would be prejudiced to just dismiss EVERYONE who blinded themselves by shooting a frog into their own faces as stupid....

80. No, it wouldn't
But it might be to assume that EVERYONE that owns a spud gun has or will shoot a frog out of it (into their face, no less).

61. Here is a hypothetical question.
My husband enjoys firecrackers, and like a lot of boys his age (33) occasionally plays what if, as in what if I put it inside an empty camera film roll? This of course drives me nuts, because it's dangerous. If I were to come into the Lounge and tell you that my husband had 3rd degree burns on the right side of his face from an exploding plastic container, would I receive sympathy...or scorn.

Yes, the boy was stupid, just as my own husband can be stupid, as can the majority of the population. But deserve blindness? I can't fall that far.

66. What if
he tied it to a dog's tail...and the dog ran to him?

What if he told a small child to hold it after he lit it...and the child tossed it to him?

68. My boy is 33, this boy is 17 (?) I think it is horribly stupid what he did
but I will not call him names, nor ponder his genetic pool. My point was and still is. People do stupid things. I thought we were talking about frogs here. The things that lots of people (self included) like to eat the rear appendages of. Again, I emphasize, no it's not right, but neither is it right for my husband to light a firecracker in a film roll. Should I divorce him?

72. Gee
if you have to ask strangers on an internet board, perhaps you have to take a long hard look at your marriage...

"People do stupid things. I thought we were talking about frogs here."
And I thought we were talking about some vicious idiot who was trying to kill frogs for the fun of it, when his own ugly and stupid nature backfired on him.

85. misdirected sympathy
I wish the people with sympathy for people who torture and kill helpless creatures simply for fun, and who cause their own harm to themselves, would redirect it (and their energies) toward people and animals who are suffering through no fault of their own. There is no shortage of such unfortunate beings in the world.

86. I grew up in a home where it was normal to torture
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 07:53 PM by Ladyhawk
helpless animals for fun. I'm not kidding. My father did it. My brother copied him. And I copied them both, hoping I could fit in. I did have a conscience, however, and always felt guilty for doing the things my family thought were "normal."

Guess what? My family are all hopelessly rabid right-wing Republicans. And now I have zero respect for them as human beings. When my father was dying of cancer, I felt sorry for him, but after he died the only emotion I could conjure was relief.

I ask you this: had I somehow mangled myself while doing what I was taught, would you have had no sympathy for me? Is it possible this kid was only doing what he had been taught and might have changed at some point?

I changed. I will not own a gun. I do not shoot helpless animals for "fun." And it didn't take getting blinded for me to realize that torturing helpless animals is wrong. Unfortunately, my brother is probably just as bloodthirsty as he was when we were children, as is his friend, who is a California state senator. If you think this kid was being cruel to animals, you would shudder in disgust if you knew what this Republican senator does.
