Take Back the Media is here in Boston covering the Convention - just finished with our Media Summit over the weekend (which was FABULOUS) and this morning got our press credentials at the Westin here..
We got through the two lines of security, past dogs (one tried to attack a lady in line, hated her for some reason, real floor show there), and the signs indicating what you can and cannot bring into the convention -- and who should we catch TRYING to get OUT of the building but Michael Moore -- he was literally shuffling along surrounded by cameras with mikes shoved into his face..
so I jumped into the fray and pushed my way to the interior of the roving pack of mini cameras and the behemouth National rigs and spoke quickly to him..
First, let me preface this with what happened at the New Hampshire Primary (which we covered as well) -- back in the cold days of that event Michael Moore had gone on the stage to promote Wes Clark - giving a rousing speech -- the one where he wanted to see the debate between the GENERAL and the DRAFT DODGER -- and at the end I pushed my way through the crowd and time froze -- everyone stood back as I handed him a TBTM card and said, "I don't know if you remember me, but Take Back the Media produced the ARMY OF ONE ad that was one of the 16 finalists in the Bush in 30 seconds contest by MoveOn.org and I'd love to have a meet with you, even a little time on the phone?"
Michael had looked at me and said spiritedly, "You're the GUY!" -- so I handed him our biz card and said, "Thanks Michael, just a short meet sometime, eh?" and he said, "I can call you with the number right here?" as he patted his pants where he'd stashed the card - and I retorted, "Yep, that would be fine - I'll just leave you alone now - I know how busy you are.." and backed away as the crowd surged in..
SO TODAY, when I had forced my way in I asked him, "Michael! Back when you were throwing your support to Wes Clark and you announced our ARMY OF ONE ad on the MoveOn Bush in 30 seconds contest as one of the contestants I got to meet you personally, you had said to me - 'You're the GUY!' - I've wondered ever since what you MEANT BY THAT?"
Remember, he has maybe 10 cameras in his face, and 20 mikes and he says,
"I dunno - I must have been on Drugs!"... and he took my biz card while I repeated, "C'mon Michael, give us a call!" grinning..
I freaking died laughing as I patted him on the back, thanking him as he started shuffling away, surrounded - trying desperately to escape the Media pod hounds..
Later as I related it to the camera team we all started laughing thinking, "Oh shit, what if I just ruined his career? They've now got a clip of him saying he must have been on Drugs!"
One pal said, "don't worry about it - he can turn that right around and talk about Bush's drug use.."
So now I feel all better :)
I'm thinking of grabbing my little video camera and running around the Convention doing "Gonzo" video journalism while it's all going on.. after all, in the last hotel I had gone down late at night and found a precious book in their lending library that seems to fit right in and can't put down..
It's called, "Fear and Loathing on the 1972 Campaign Trail".. by Hunter S. Thompson..
Maybe I could do that with my little video camera..
think I should?
