Songs and politics.
This is actually one thing that the Democrats have gotten away with to a greater degree than the Republicans. Reagan tried it in 1984 with Springsteen's "Born in the USA". Springsteen made his disapproval painfully clear.

In 1992, Clinton used Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop". It was okay. In 2000, Gore used B.T.O.'s "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" and it was okay. Same year, Bush tried to use John Mellencamp's R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. Mellencamp said no. Then Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down". Tom Petty said no. I think they tried using The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" much to the Chagrin of Pete Townsend. Also they used Van Halen's "Right Now". Which, I think they actually got away with.

This year Kerry and the Dems have used a couple of Van Halen songs from during the Hagar era. Hagar is a Republican. They haven't caught hell for it yet. Just an interesting observation. Maybe Kerry might have been safer with Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer". I don't think Jon Bon Jovi would have minded.
