Did Dick Cheney Rent a U-Haul when the First Bush Administration Ended? (
!!!!!!!!!!!!CNN ACTION ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The probable bullshit not covered (the evidence):

Scene: Republican National Convention
Philadelphia, PA (2000)
Event: Acceptance of the Nomination for Vice-President
Liar-in-Question: Richard Cheney (Professional Asswipe)
The Lie: I have to tell you that I never expected to be in this position. Eight years ago, when I completed my years as secretary of defense, I loaded a U-Haul truck and drove home to Wyoming. I didn't plan on a return to public office. Lynne and I settled into a new private life. There was time for fishing and grandchildren, and we were content. But now I am glad to be back in the arena, and let me tell you why.

We all remember, of course, the intense scrutiny that Mr. Cheney came under in the face of the extremely implausible notion that the multi-millionaire Secretary of Defense rented a U-Haul, loaded the U-Haul, and drove the U-Haul from Washington DC to Wyoming. Or perhaps you do not remember the scrutiny, because there was none. Now, CNN is threatening to take up Alexa Kerry's story about the John Kerry hamster saving! They want to check facts. they can check Cheney's statement while they're at it. As far as I know, the only mention the press has ever made of the Cheney U-Haul lie is in Slate, where it received the following two responses:

("Home" is now Texas, by the way, but presumably Dallas-based Halliburton took care of the move from Wyoming, so he didn't have to hassle with a U-Haul again.) (Say, what was Cheney doing loading that U-Haul, anyway? A man with his health history ought to leave the heavy lifting to someone else, no?)

Subject: Dick Cheney, Common Man

Why is Rob Walker the only journalist to point out the extreme unlikelihood that Dick Cheney packed and drove a U-Haul from D.C. to Wyoming when he left the Pentagon, as he indicated in his convention speech? Let's see, which size U-Haul is best for packing up a nine-bedroom mansion in McLean, Va.—would that be the 10-footer or the 15-footer? Did he get his boxes from the grocery store on Sunday night, or did he buy them from U-Haul at the marked-up, let's-gyp-the-desperate-guy rate? Did he call up James Baker and Brent Scowcroft? ("Hey, guys, I'm movin' on Saturday—there's a six-pack and a pizza with your names on it if you'll be at my place around ten.") The American people demand a full investigation into this highly improbable, and seemingly mendacious, claim. Or at least I do. Gore: Here's your red meat. Get on it, man!

-----------------------------------------------

It's been almost 4 years of nothing on this, despite the hamster fetish of our investigative journalists and CNN. perhaps it is time to resuscitate this story!!! Email CNN, asking them if Cheney in fact loaded a U-Haul after the defeat of Bush 1. The American people need to know whether their vice presidential cnadidate would lie about something like that during a convention!!!!
