Poll question: Do you "love" Laura Bush? An unscientific DU poll!
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 12:20 PM by CBHagman
The other night I was reading the cover story of this weekend's Washington Post Magazine. Pollsters Richard Morin and Claudia Deane (I hope I have the names right) were providing an overview of polling data and developments from the 2000 election and comparing it with today. I was working my way through the article when I stopped cold at a sentence comparing the relative merits of the candidates' wives. The authors of the article proclaimed that "Everybody loves Laura Bush, a former librarian who dresses sensibly," but that Teresa Heinz Kerry might be "too cosmopolitan" for the American people. They cited the PRONUNCIATION OF HER NAME as a possible problem.

Now, aside from the gratuitous Mama T bashing, I was pretty cross about the big assumption regarding Laura Bush. After all, how well does the American public know her? Have they really formed opinions regarding her? I don't see how they have much help in that, as she is pretty much in the background but for the occasional article or interview. Betty Ford and Hillary Clinton she ain't.

As Tom Lehrer said, some people don't love their fellow man, and I hate people like that. How do you feel about Laura Welch Bush? Kindly share.

1. Standard Imperial Pravda. Can be found across the dial and in print
Yawn.

Like Soviet Pravda saying "But everybody loves Mrs. Stalin!"

Just using it to flog Theresa HK. Same old same old.

4. She said the Con flag was heritage and not hate when Chimpy
was campaigning in South Carolina and the Confederate battle flag was flying from the capital. Pickles is as scummy as any of the Bush regime.

7. Eek! I didn't know she'd weighed in on the Confederate flag flap.
It's depressing to learn which side she took. Then again, I don't think she's at all spirited (there's an understatement), and she's certainly not progressive.

I remember her comments about "teaching abstinence." No, you don't teach abstinence; you give kids the foundation of values they need and then teach them biology, backed with lengthy discussions of decision-making, protecting onself and so forth.

Teach abstinence. Grrr.

3. I find her relatively inoffensive and barely tolerable.
As long as she doesn't get behind the wheel of a car.

8. Laura Bush killed her boyfriend while driving at 17 and never served a day
Here is a link to one of the many reports of her killing her boyfriend in 1963. http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3910b26e685a.htm

So, while Teresa may be cosmopolitan, like that's bad, at least she never killed anyone!

14. Equal justice - for rich whites only.
Imagine if it had been a black teenager who ran a stop sign and ran down a white woman.

11. When she referred to her dogs as "animals", that did it for me.
I have this silly notion that your pets are more than just "animals", so whatever microscopic amount of goodwill I had towards Laura Bush disappeared when I read about that.

12. I essentially have no problem with Laura ....
Nor with the Bush daughters .... Why should I ? ...

As long as they are nonpolitical in nature, and dont express the same views that GeorgieBoy spouts, then I havent any complaint about them ....

Hating the spouses and family of political opponents simply because they ARE the family of your opponent is a crass and ugly strategy of the ugly arsed right wing .... It does nothing for our cause ...

19. Non political in nature?
See my post 15. When you take policy stands and actively campaign you are NOT non political. That goes for the Bush twins as well. They are actively campaigning for the Shrub.

15. Anyone who would allow herself to be sent
out on the day of Ronald Reagan's funeral to bash his widow, as not being herself, and using the Alzheimer's death of her own father as a reason to give political cover to her husband's anti stem cell stand, is vile. She also has crawled off and hidden the pro choice support she publicly stated at the beginning of this faux regime. She is willing to betray her father and her daughters, as well as her sex in support of positions she KNOWS are wrong. She is a former Democrat who told Ophra that she wouldn't have voted for her father in law. She may be emotionally abused or on drugs , but my sympathy goes only so far. She is a sell out protecting her own hide at the expense of everyone else. She is beneath contempt.

Honestly, I feel that there is just no one home. Nothing to love or hate.

And yes, I do find this weird.
