And I have to say I found the amount of thuggery going on amazing. Both my husband and I had our wallets stolen, and then the security guards stole 4,000 rubles from my husband's wallet at the airport in Volgograd, and there was nothing he could do about it. We constantly saw men who had been beat up badly (I'm guessing drinking has a lot to do with that), as well as police harassing people driving, or just walking down the streets. There were articles in the local English papers about the contract killings as well as articles about the police targeting the Scandinavians. In the magazines in our hotel we were warned about areas of the subways etc. to avoid due to all the pickpockets, but we still managed to get hit. And there's not much that can be done since the police are so corrupt. Other than that, we had a pretty good time.
