Why has the Statue of Liberty been re-opened?
Buzzflash this morning makes a good point. We are now in the midst of these "terror warnings" centering on NYC - yet the S-O-L re-opens for the first time since 9/11? Doesn't seem to make alot of sense.

My personal theory is that AWOL is planning to make a triumphant visit to the Statue during the RNC and that Rove & Co. mandated that statue be open to the public by the time of the convention. They don't want it to look like AWOL got to make a special trip when he does his photo op there.

4. The sickening thing is that
Bush and most of the delegates have nothing but contempt for New York City the diversity she (and the statue) represents. He uses NYC when he needs a little 9/11 political mojo but couldn't give two shits about the city.

5. Hi Jeff !
Hows the revue coming?

Oh I thought this is so arrogant AGAIN......Here they are costing the taxpayers millions, they look like the Nazi Goon squad up there on TV and here Lady Liberty is re opening during the highest Threat Level.....It should never have been closed in my opinion and then to reopen, if this thing were real (tera tera tera) then it looks like "Bring em on". I see through this ploy. The reason for having all of this crap ws so they could reopen the Statue of Liberty and say, "We we ain't afraid of no terra". Its all hype and its also a dry run for the RNC. You think this is bad New Yorkers? Wait till the RNC!

How much are a pack of cigarettes up there Jeff?

9. Hi Amanda!
the revue is on hiatus until 8/17 but has been extended by two performances (8/31 and 9/1 during the RNC)

our first reviews are coming out this week. (i will post them later)

you can see cast photos at www.questionw.com

(cigs run $7.50)

and the 'terror two-step' is pure HYPE. no one I know takes it seriously and despite *some* increased checking of trucks, there is no real efforts because nothing less than shutting down the entire city would do anything.

I could bring ANYTHING onto a train or subway. ANYTHING. 'securing' Manhattan is impossible.

Ouch on the cigs...I shall stop complaining today of the 2.46 a pack here. As far as the security......Someone needs to tell the media about the lapse..Not that they would report it or anything but look what you guys are paying for a bunch of goons to walk around looking MACHO !

6. It should never have been closed
Totally ridiculous in my opinion. Way overboard to not allow people up inside it too. I guess the terrorists have won.

7. It should be celebrated but the terror alert trumped this story too
The lady (or at least the island) should have stayed open. It's great that it IS open again.

8. pre-empt * in advance ... statue = gift from France
Dem speakers should be punching little holes here and there leading up to the RNC event and star-studded media events scripted for bunnypants ... (if only) ... but, we're under anger management (see Arianna's blog) ...

Bush = saviour = Lady Liberty isn't entirely safe, or free yet ... ergo, 4 more selected years .... but, the pedestal, the foundation has been liberated or you can't destroy our bedrock or some scipted marlarkey ... maybe he'll parachute to the island or water ski in?

meanwhile, I wouldn't visit there ......
in case they may have other plans for reopening it which may be more precarious than an appearance by *

the Democratic rapid response team (is there one? who leads it, Lieberman and Miller on Faux? harhar) should point out that the statue was a gift from our friend and ally 'the French' ... just to defuse any photo op

I predict the GOP convention will make the 1972 Nixon and 1984 Raygun conventions look like they were prototypes ... Watch at one's own risk ... and, the Media will be only make it more sickening.

In 1968, we had a 'war time' election ... and division and alternative choices for dealing with things were blurring reality ... in the final weeks, Humphrey was frantically traveling throughout the US, finally, using stronger words against the deemed peace candidate, Richard Nixon ... he came close to winning, but, it was too little too late ...

some may say, the 1968 convention wasn't as united as the 2004 convention; and, there are no lessons to be learned from HHH's race for the White House ... most of today's conventions are 99% scripted ... reality is hidden, muted, monitored, etc. 1968 was realtime ... from floor walkouts to protests outside ...

just saying ... the sand hour glass seems to speed up toward election day ... racing against time isn't the time to put forth the real issues at hand ... put them on the defensive now ...

which I believe could be true. Is the potential of Bush speaking there during his convention. Opening it up weeks before might help Americans forget that it was actually opened when they had New York on such a high alert.
Remember this in case you see his arrogant smirk speaking outside the statue in the weeks ahead....It would prove even more, how transparent this threat alert is.
