With their presidential candidates running neck-and-neck in the polls, Democrats and Republicans have begun a tug of war to convince the public that the truth is on their side. A week after the GOP assembled a group of prominent Republicans to respond to news from the Democratic National Convention, Democratic leaders yesterday struck back by announcing the formation their own "truth squad."
"When George Bush talks about the results of his administration, it should come as no surprise that this president is not telling the American people the whole truth," said Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, a former presidential candidate, at a news conference in Washington. "But for George Bush, the truth hurts."
Accusing the president of mismanaging the economy and "glossing over" the truth about the Iraq war, Gephardt joined almost a dozen senators, members of Congress, and veterans to echo themes raised by the party faithful in Boston last week. The squad promised to crisscross paths with the president on the campaign trail and to maintain a visible presence at the Republican National Convention in New York later this month.
"We cannot stand idly by as he misleads this country further," the squad wrote in its mission statement. "We vow no false claim will go unanswered; no attack will go without a response."
