Randi Rhodes is screwing us by taking days off.

I love Randi, but:

This is exactly what she did when she was broadcasting in Palm Beach County. She bitches about Bush taking vacations in Crawford, but I've never heard any other radio personality take as much time off as Randi.

And here's my problem with that: The right wing has 99% of radio time compared to our 1%. If she's going to take time off, she should at least have a guest replacement (someone like Lynn Samuels perhaps?) who can keep people from changing the station.

In Palm Beach County, Randi used to brag about how many days she managed to take off. Well, wake the fuck up, Randi. I've always been a big fan, but my patience is wearing thin. We need every instant of air time we can get to counter THEM. And reruns don't cut it.

You'll get nothing but a looped advert and sample when she is not on the air.

Air America won't make any difference this election cycle. I'm sure that it is making a difference. It broadcasts in Portland, Oregon (a swing state), and I think will convince many of how important their votes are.

Just kidding. I love Randi but I do not want re-runs of a show that is supposed to be current. I do, however, like re-plays of shows late at night if I missed the earlier live show. If I want to listen to last week's Randi I'll check out her archived shows. I'd rather listen to a substitute of her choosing to cover TODAY'S news.

Thom Hartmenn is the only one that I don't mind doing re-runs because his topics tend to be more lofty and timeless.

When I logged on to Air America today and realized they were rerunning last Friday's "Randi Rhodes Show," it annoyed the fuck out of me.

Come on, Randi. If you're going to take a day off, have your programming director arrange for a fill-in! That's what Rush Limbaugh does.

She works an extra 5 hours a week on the air during the week. And she also works alone like Malloy. So I feel that she deserves to be able to take more time off. She earns it.

And if she's ill, that could be a last minute deal. Maybe it's not so easy to get a replacement in that circumstance. But I love the idea of replacement hosts. Time to send AAR an email. Sounds like you already did that, so I'll join you in lobbying them.

I wish she could get a guest host maybe that will happen one day soon for planned absences. However, I have listened to her for years and she didn't take off inordinate amounts of time. She puts in 4 hours every day and it takes a lot of preperation. She has been off when she has been sick. In this last year leading up to AAR she was off quite a bit but that was because she was working on getting the show on AAR into a reality.

Finally, I point out that she is a working mother. Like many of us she needs time off to take care of family business. All of us in America, and I repeat all of us, need more time than most businesses give us to take care of family and community issues.

Randi is in the six to seven figure pay bracket and she's not doing it for the money anymore.

We're not talking about hours here. We're talking about a public figure who has clawed her way up to where she is through tenacity, toughness, grit, and a belief in her cause.

I really, really tried to like Randi Rhodes during my Malloy withdrawal period, but she pretty much treats all her callers like shit regardless of whether they're right or left. Now that Malloy's back, it's nice to hear someone who seems to know who his friends and enemies are.
