3. ok...
... he was a former CIA analyst and he was on the show to take the anti-Goss position. He was very nervous. He said that Bush is politicizing the CIA to escape his responsibilities for letting 9/11 happen and screwing up Iraq. Bush is going to blame everything on the CIA and Goss is going to go along with it, that's his job.

That's essentially what he said.

5. no, sorry
I don't recall his exact words but it was more like "failure to prevent 9/11."

6. Nominating Goss could be a very big mistake.
Edited on Tue Aug-10-04 06:44 PM by Jackpine Radical
First, PG ain't gonna get confirmed fast or easy. Not before the election.

Second, the possibility of having Goss as #1 and 4 more years of Shrubco is not likely to be a welcome prospect in certain realms of the CIA.

Therefore, although the CIA has been leaking stuff at a measured pace so far, the very idea of having PG in charge is likely to cause some people to completely open the spigots.

Walter Pincus is gonna be very busy in the next 90 days.

Edited for clarity.

7. Ray McGovern -- WOW!
That was AMAZING!

For those of you who didn't catch PBS NewsHour, here's the deal. The opening segment was in regard to the Porter Goss nomination for DCI.

On the nay side, Stansfield Turner, and Ray McGovern -- of "Retired Intelligence Professionals for Sanity" -- they have been publishing hugely critical-of-bushco pieces since before the Iraq invasion.

Ray McGovern, having been given the final say in this particular segment, just fired off a MAJOR and excellent salvo against the appointment of Porter Goss as CIA head. Shredded the rationale.

I'm sorry, in the rush to type a post about this, I cannot now give a reasonable paraphrase of what all he said. Just watch it if you have a chance, or replay it from the PBS website. (written transcript won't be up until at least tomorrow, I think...)

KS Senator Pat Roberts was one of the pro-Goss apologists, as was some author (whose name escapes me) who apparently wrote a book about the CIA, or something, and was therefore deemed a worthy purviewer of opinion.

Pfffftttt... When you know it's bullshit, it's riduculously easy to spot. The biggest problem we face is that so many in this country don't WANT to know that it's all bullsit, because then they might actually have to think about what loving one's country REALLY means...

sw

The very next segment looked worth watching also, about the 9/11 Commission report (I think?) -- but I missed most of it because I was typing this post -- I'll look for a re-run or online file myself.
