If Bush pulls a Van Hilleary, it will be political suicide...
Van Hilleary did eventually debate Bredesen but during the primary elections he refused to participate in debates. It hurt him terribly.... He did LOSE to Democrat Bredesen and Tennessee finally has another Democrat Governor after 8 years of tyranny under the SORRIEST excuse for a governor, Don Sundquist... Anyway, here is the story below...
http://dailybeacon.utk.edu/article.php/6609

snip....
Those of you who have taken the time to watch the periodic televised debates between the gubernatorial candidates over the past couple of months have probably noticed a glaring omission on the republican side.

While Jim Henry and Bob Tripp have showed up each time and engaged in sometimes lively debates on the issues, Van Hilleary has repeatedly refused to debate his opponents.

Hilleary does this, presumably, because he considers himself the front-runner in the campaign. The polls support this view, but Henry is undoubtedly gaining on him, as the latest poll shows Hilleary holding a shrinking 45-32 lead with about a week left until the primary.

What Hilleary is trying to use is an old psychological political ploy where he tries to place himself above the fray in voters' minds by letting the public continually see his opponents alone together. He's hoping to make people see these two as the desperate candidates and him as the confident one who doesn't need to waste his time with debates.

But especially with Henry receiving endorsements from nearly every major newspaper in the state, Hilleary has been thrown a curveball. He hoped to paint his opponents into a corner, but it didn't work. Now, it's time for voters to show Hilleary the consequences of greatly underestimating your competition.

1. yes, and THANK GOD....
We have a very good governor now. Bredesen's approval rating is around 80 percent and he has quite a bit of influence in republican East TN. I am hoping he'll be able to use some of this influence to help Kerry/Edwards here. Tennessee is definitely up for grabs. Right now, it's a statistical tie. :kick:
