1. Cracks me up every time!
I love it. And, BTW, it's "Oy", not "Oye."

The music, actually--there's something wonderfully life-affirming about it.

17. "Wonderfully life-affirming"? I don't know if I'd go that far...
...but the style is called Klezmer Music (don't know the specific piece he uses).

If you like it, Google and explore all you like.

to be overly amused by it, which I am not. But I can live with Jewish jokes for a couple of minutes.

9. It's horrible.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 12:17 PM by UdoKier
I grew up around nothing but Jewish people. I find Jewish humor funny in small doses, but Oy oy oy is not funny at all.

I would prefer he did a segment that somehow ridicules the bib-thumpin' southern folks, maybe something like a betty bowers thing. Maybe he could get the REAL BEtty Bowers folks to participate for real!

15. Betty Bower's humor is white bread.
I think Jewish humor is appropriate here, since, oh gee, Al is Jewish. You know the old writer's mantra, "stick to what you know".

19. Bowers is funny because she ridicules the evil of the Xian right.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 12:43 PM by UdoKier
Jewish humor is funny if it actually makes fun of Jewish foibles, but just playing Jewish music and saying things in a Yiddish accent doesn't make it funny.

Another thing thhat detracts from the segment is the fact that all the stories ARE serious as a heart attack.

"Sharon continues to pesecute palestinians" "Oy."

"Palestinian militants continue to suicide-bomb." "Oy"

"More than 10,000 US troops are thought to have returned from Iraq maimed or amputated" "Oy oy oy"

Yeah, freaking hilarious.

24. And I respect that you like it.
The thing is radio is all about ratings. Maybe the Oy oy oy thing goes over in heavily Jewish areas like New York, but I doubt it, since Jewish New Yorkers are a VERY sophisticated crowd who would probably bore quickly of amateurish Jewish humor.

To Franken's credit, he's done very well in the ratings in New York. But I think that may have more to do with New Yorkers despising Limbaugh and looking for an alternative than with Franken's comedy schtick.

If I thought that most people were laughing at "Oy oy oy", I wouldn't criticize it, even though I personally don't like it. But I have a strong hunch that it makes a lot of radios turn off when it starts...

Thhat one is sheer agony.

I love Franken. He can be amusing when just discussing annd being himself, but his planned-out bits are not funny.

Even Stuart Smalley wore out its welcome for me.

14. I think it sometimes comes close...
...to being in questionable taste. I've heard Lampfer tell Franken about the latest suicide bombing in Iraq or about a number of US troops being killed and Franken doing the "Oy" bit and then the whole thing ending, as usual, with that upbeat Klezmer music (I think that's what it's called). It often rubs me wrong. It depends on the news that Lampfer is relating to Franken.

22. Funny, but Mike Malloy is ten times funnier.
Even though Malloy's humor is VERY dark, it cracks me up.

Usually I just cringe at Franken's dated schtick.

Franken has a knack for pointing out lying liars. I loved his exchange with O'Reilly. The fact that Franken is a bit nebbishy and not exactly macho makes it even funnier when he tears the liars a new one. I just wish he would come up with some more relevant comedy material, or just keep the show lighthearted, but drop the "comedy bits" altogether.

Although the best part is usually the mention of the "sponsor" at the end.

I'd like to hear an Australian version with AC/DC's "TNT" playing in the background.

OK, maybe only once.
