Paranoia Sneaks up on a Suspecting Electorate
Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 10:48 AM by MaryH
This is so sad! http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A58409-2004Aug11?language=printer

Among New York Democrats there's a weird fatalism about John Kerry's chances in November. The city's mania to see the president routed does nothing to lift the mood of bullish defeatism. What you hear is that Bush will still win by a hair -- not because Kerry fails to rev the electorate's engine, but because "they" will "pull something."

What "they" will "pull" ranges from the notion that "they" --sometimes known as "Karl Rove"--will produce Osama bin Laden from some luxury cave on Halloween, to a super-scary election-eve terror attack warning that would have all the authenticity of Orson Welles's 1938 radio hoax about the Martians, but better production values. On these premises, it is a given that the timing of the recent terror reports was sheer manipulation. Exhibit A is a photo in the takeout on terrorism in this week's Newsweek. See that big picture of Fran Townsend, the White House's homneland security adviser? In the background is Karl Rove. C'mom, what's he doing at a terrorism meeting?

"Ive heard people say that the Bush team might blow up something around election day, just like the Nazis burned the Reichstag and then blamed it on the Jews to get elected," a writer friend e-mailed me this week. "The surprise is that it all comes from your above-average Times-reading academics."

1. NO it's GOOD
that this is getting printed. it lessens the chance that they'll actually get away with crap like this.

We need to be and remain a SUSPECTING ELECTORATE.

2. We have one great weapon in our arsenal!
Knowledge. I just wished people would remember that.

3. I have gotten so paranoid
and I didn't used to be this way. I don't trust anything the medical profession comes out with. I don't trust any information that the White House comes out with. I don't believe in the terror information we are getting.

And I don't think there is anything that our present adm. will stop at to get elected again. I really feel like we are dealing with the devil.

I feel like my survival depends on my wits.

4. Out on Left coast, we hear that too. Even independents say
that bushies demons (rove et al) will pull something to derail the elections. BUT the feeling among the righteous (not political leaning, just not registered with any party) independents in the hills and valleys of WA state and Oregon is that armed rebellion will break out, at least in the western states.

Too many here carry too much suspicions about the other washington and the fools/crooks there.

I was surprised to note in recent talks with people up and down the coasts here that many have actually considered what would happen, i.e. - would US troops fire on US citizens who refused to 'accept' the results of yet another SCOTUS decision or a 'fire' in WashReichStad.....

then the big joke I have heard more than once is that Bushie is screwed if he is counting on US troops to put down rebellion in USof A as he done sent all the troops away.....

but seriously, there are long faces on old men/husbands/fathers out here who in quiet voices are wondering just what will happen when armed soverign individualism runs into armed crinimal political 'open' machinations.....

then, I also note that it is not possible to control the USofA via garrison or martial law as there are 9 guns per person, and our standing army of 2.4 million persons CANNOT garrison a nation of nearly 290 millions, the same way that 150thousand military cannot control a nation of 25 million Iraqis....and we have more firearms loose in our country per capita than Iraq does....

gonna be an interesting election to say the least.
I am reminded of the old saying out here.

Just cause you're paranoid, don't make you wrong.
