McGreavy's wife must be a real class act.
To go up with him hand-in-hand is a hell of a show of support when taking such a blow publicly.
Cheers to her.

7. I feel horrible for her and her kids..
This can't be easy watching her husband stand next to her and essentially say their marriage has been a sham all these years; I wouldn't wish that on anybody..

12. They haven't been married long. He married her somewhere around
the time he took office. I always felt that for him it was a marriage of convenience. It never dawned on me that he was batching it for so long was because he was gay.

15. Kids? Then she is a model parent as well as strong wife
Being a parent comes before most other things. She sounds like she has her shit together.

16. I'm not sure I'd say it was a 'sham'
I don't think you can have children and raise them with someone, live with them for years, and not end up feeling something for them.

Was it more 'friendship' or 'love'? Hell, I'm not about to start drawing lines there... I'll leave that one for the poets to figure out.

If she didn't know he was gay, then there was a lie between them, but I wouldn't assume the whole marriage was a sham. It was what it was.

21. If he married her w/o telling her that he was gay...
then yeah, it's a sham marriage. If they did this knowing his
sexual orientation, that's another matter..

18. I've known couples where the husband has later come out...
.. and the wife never saw it coming. Even tho, the friends had all pretty much guessed it years before. I don't believe she would have knowingly had children with him if that were the case. And, he wouldn't have had to have had an extra marital affair.. it would not be news. She's strong. She'll need to be. I hope he's strong too, his life is falling apart (or perhaps it will be a liberating experience for him, to live the way he's wanted to, finally).

5. the only gay marriage i oppose
is when an unsuspecting straight person is in it.

she's a classact even if she IS a stepford wife. always better for the kids when the parents act like adults.

8. We don't know that she was "unsuspecting".
Personally, I would guess that she knew, but that would just be an ubsubstantiated wild guess.

9. One of my 2 best friends all through high school (late 50s) married, had 3
kids and after 15 or so years admitted to his wife Kathy he was and had always been gay. It was traumatic for a while but it actually worked out about as well as any divorce can...they remain good friends and his kids are very close to both their parents. You have to remember, if you're old enough, how difficult if not well-nigh impossible it was back in those days to be uncloseted. Not that it's all that -easy- even yet.

10. Maybe she has inner strength like Hillary.
How many women could have taken the shit Hillary stood up to. Not only against her husband but, against her personally. Hillary's got more intestinal fortitude than a lot of men I know.

13. I assume they'll divorce
In the near future when more is settled. I'm sure this is all very traumatic for her. Part of me sympathizes with McGreevey's pressure to stay closeted and live a double life, but that still doesn't excuse what he's done. I wish him the best too and I hope the allegations about rape and sexual harrassment are not true and he can sort his life out.

14. Could be class....could be heavy depressants....
I think if my father came out as a homosexual, admitted an affair, was hit with a civil lawsuit and corruption charges all in one day, my mom would be deep into a bottle of valium right now.

20. What a hateful thing to say.
"Beard" or not, it is unlikely they would have married without some foundation of love. I believe she appeared with him as a show of support for someone she genuinely cares for.

To characterize it as mere Stepford obedience denigrates and renders suspect ALL human relationships.

Well, I feel more sorry for the children. I have no idea why she chose to appear at the press conference but I respect her for doing so. What a horrible life.
