Powell suggest Japan change pacifist constitution.
Friday, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Japan must consider revising the constitution if it wants to become a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council.

Article Nine of the postwar, U.S.-drafted constitution renounces the right to go to war and forbids a military, although it is interpreted as permitting forces for self-defense.

Both the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition Democratic Party are working on proposals to revise the constitution. Many ordinary citizens and lawmakers are opposed.

An opinion poll in May showed 70 percent of Japanese lawmakers were against revising Article Nine.

OK, what is this about? Why the hell is Powell saying this? Why would the US Secretary of State, of all people, urge Japan to renounce pacifism and start building up their military? If the majority of Japanese oppose revising the constitution, then it shouldn't be revised.

1. FWIW, My Opinion Goes Somewhat Thusly
Powell is obeying his neocon overlords and laying the groundwork for conflict with North Korea in the short term and with China in the long term.

2. This is like the Canadian MoD telling the US to dump the 2nd Amendment.
The US has no business telling Japan what to do - and Japan has an inherent interest in NOT allowing its young men & women to be killed in George Bush's wars.

4. Old News
Old news - We, the US, has been trying to get Japan to chnage this for years. We made certain their industry was rebuilt to stand with us against Stalin. And we have been pushing for more Japanease involvement since at least Vietnam.
