IS it me or have the GOP shifted tactics in CA Recall?
I think they want Davis to hold on to his job now. Not withstanding all this media hype for Arnold, his numbers are going nowhere. He will never win with 25% of the vote. There are just too many Democrats in California and Bustemante is the only Dem in.

Republicans are beginning to realize that if Davis is ousted, Cruz wins - not them. Where does that leave them? So therefore now GOP media outlets (almost all of them) seem to be talking up Davis' chances.

What a turn of events.

1. Republicans are better off with Davis than Bustamante
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 01:45 AM by JackSwift
Davis is not liked and they can beat up on him endlessly. If Bustamante wins, the Dem party gets a clean slate in the governor's office and has an incumbant in for 2006.

This was always a high risk program for the Republicans, and while the Bush Junta smacked down Issa and got him out of the race when Arnold came in, they would have been much smarter to smack him down before he financed it.

In fact, Bustamante as governor is the worst of all possible outcomes for the Republicans and they are much worse off than if they hadn't started the recall.

2. That's a good reason to support Bustamante then in my book
.. if that would be the worst possible outcome for the Republicans. These asshats need to have their heads handed to them.

4. Arianna is the worst outcome
because it would legititmize anticorporate politics in the US. Bisumante would smart, but not nearly as bad.

9. Arianna Win??? BWHAHAHAHA
Time for her to drop out you mean just like her compadre Simon. Never trust a Green/IND who still owes California an apology for her part in Michael H's campaign against Dianne

3. I think they're getting behind Ahnuld
They pulled Simon out today to give more votes to A.S.
They want to concentrate al their votes.
They want a repuke in the gov's office badly.

They have alot at stake: Offshore oil drilling, logging the protected national forests...slacking pollution controls--tax cuts for the wealthy--

Smirk was just pusing the logging the yesterday--and notice the forests just so happen to suddenly be burning (24000 acres burned)even though it's not dry.

Gee whiz, thanks mister smirk--guess we need to log them so they won't burn right

I'd rather see the sneeeeky repuke arsenists burn them to the ground than for our national parks to turn into logging cash in shrub's pocket

5. They made some deals with him.
If he would endorse an extreme agenda then they would do what they could to make sure he would win.

7. It's mixed
I think Arnold is a double-edged sword for the GOP. On one hand, he's instantly recognizable by everyone in the state, and is viewed as a political outsider by most of the same -- generally a positive. That said, his sordid past and his gun-toting career on the silver screen make the Religious Right, the driving force behind modern GOPolitics, sqeamish. On the other hand, the moneyed elitists -- Buffet and Co. -- don't even think twice about jumping on his bandwagon. This exposes a major fault in the party that could leave the Republicans divided. Hopefully this happens, and the good people of the state also realize that the same people responsible for Bush are behind this latest mad drive for power.

Bustamente, however, is a potential GOP-DESTROYER for California. If he wins, he will be California's first-ever HISPANIC governor. This would be no small feat in a state that will very shortly boast a Hispanic ethnic majority. The Hispanic population will rally to support a Democratic Hispanic governor, effectively killing the GOP by foiling the efforts of its more progressive elements to cater to and win over Hispanics to expand its "token" minority base. A win could also put Bustamente into position to someday become a candidate for President or Vice President.

10. Question: if Bustamante becomes governor is there a special election
for Lt. Gov or does Bustamante appoint someone until
the March election?

11. WHOA!!!! Talking up Davis's chances has THIS effect
it would help suppress the vote. People would say, "Oh, well, no problem, Davis is a shoe-in. I don't need to bother."

DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS. Please.

Listen, there is ALWAYS a self-serving purpose to ANYthing the Repugs do. If they're hawking Davis's chances, it's for a reason.

12. Arnold's number's seem stuck at 25% or lower
As many people hate him as like him. I think this is a big surprise among CA republicans. CA REps are the dumbest people on earth. They are the arcitects of their own misfortune.

The Democrats seem to have rallied behind the "No to Recall, Yes to Bustemante". I see the Democrats with no where to go but up. Jeez, Bustemante is already at 35% and climbing.

Between us. I wouldn't mind if Davis loses the recall if it means Bustemante wins it. We would have the best of both worlds:

a Democratic Governor, a latino at that.

And then we can turn it all around saying that Bush should be recalled (or at least defeated in 2004) since the same arguments that the GOP make against Davis can be made against Bush.
