Arrgghh!!! They've gotten to him!
Warning: Rant with a purpose!

My husband is 8 years younger than me, and he has never voted in any election. We have been married for 4 years. I have been gently working on him for a year to get his butt in gear and vote. I also have tried to put in my subtle plugs for voting Democrat. In the past year he has lost his job and then joined the National Guard (like a lot of others who lost their jobs). He has been in training for 5 months and will (hopefully) come home in early September. Religiously he considers himself a neo-pagan and has very liberal views about many things. I was talking to him last night about registering to vote when he gets home. We got onto the topic of who to vote for in the Presidential race. He said, "Oh I know I will vote for Bush." What?!?!? When I questioned him further, he said, "Well, all we hear about is how Kerry would make everything in Iraq worse. He's going to cut our bugets and pull out of Iraq. My staff sargeant says Kerry is the worst choice you can make." The man has never paid one red cent of attention to politics, but on the word of a man he has only known a short time, he will blindly vote for *? I can't take it! How am I supposed to compete with 24/7 propaganda being shoved down his throat?

Help!

3. Talk to him calmly and rationaly
Go over his concerns point by point. John Kerry's web site has a section refuting all the lies that are being spread.

6. If you do convince him to vote Kerry...
Make sure he doesn't tell anyone in the Guard. There was a thread a few weeks ago about a veteran's wife who called into Malloy (or maybe it was Guy James) who said his superior in the military was going to "make sure he was working all day" on Nov 2 becasue he voiced his support for Kerry.
I wouldn't put it past them...

8. Does your husband want the US to stay in Iraq for decades?
Kerry would like to get the US out within four years.

9. Hell, I don't know what he wants.
But I would think getting out would be attractive. I know they brainwash to a certain extent, but damn, this makes me sick.

11. If your husband wants to be able to stay neopagan..................
he should NOT vote for Bush. Remind him that Bush is a fundamentalist Christian and his best buddies want to make life peachy for Christians and hell for non-Christians. Bush does not believe in separation of church and state. Remember Salem??? Things will be a lot worse for "heretics" if the fundies get any more control.

12. And don't forget that
National Guard units get sent to Iraq, stop-lossed over there, and killed at a much higher rate than active Army troops. They also don't get adequate armor and equipment. If Bush is re-elected, your hubby can expect an 18-month to 2-year tour of duty in Iraq--if he lives that long.

16. Facts versus Predictions
I look at this as a comparison between an historical Bush record and the Sergeants predictions.

This Sergeant likely never foresaw the Bush administrations mismanagement of the war. How could his judgment be any better concerning his suspicions, his predictions for a future Kerry administration?

18. He would trust this man?
I think this pic says a lot about the true character of the Giggling Murderer. Nasty creepy fuck that he is!

Of course it's easy to say that crap about Kerry now. When has Kerry EVER had the chance to make executive decisions on behalf of this country? How does anybody know that "Kerry would make things worse?" Ask him, based on what PROOF? Because the TEE-VEE tells him so?

Tell your Hubby to believe half of what he sees and almost none of what he hears. Ask him what his 'gut' is telling him.

If I were in your shoes I'd blow a cork :nuke: I hope you're "cooler headed" than I would be? SAY, Bartcop counters the right wingnut spin pretty thouroughly. Duct tape him to a chair, his mouth too....heh heh.....and make him read a few issues ;-) Good luck

21. I try to have a cool head
because DH has anger issues (aren't you glad he is in the Army?) from childhood. I really think he just needs to get home and away from what he is around right now. But --- what about all the other people in the military? They are probably being fed this stuff, too. How can there be counteraction? It's just like not having an answer to Rush Limbaugh on Armed Forces Radio.

25. Hmmm...
if you say your DH has "anger issues from childhood", and he sounds a bit young.. I wonder if the staff sargent, and the military, is somehow offering him some parenting or stability he did not have as a child? Perhaps a welcome father figure? I couldn't imagine my husband listening to someone more than me on those things.. outside of his musical cohorts, I am the one he listens to the most. I am his biggest influence.

20. I don't know enough about this stuff
as I only get information from DH. I know he has a good relationship with one of them, maybe they were talking in private? I really don't know the details about it. I plan to continue talking to him as best I can, however, I only get to talk to him once a day for a few minutes. No long conversations unless it is the weekend.

22. Here's what I did to convert my older brother
I layed down facts in common conversation one after another. After he started to get it, I rushed him to see F9-11! It worked really well! He went from right-wing nut job to moderate Democrat!

23. That would be hard to hear from my spouse!
I have a feeling your husband is very young. I don't know of anyone, out of their 20's, who would be so easily led. Can you imagine if all of us were that way? One word from our boss, no research on the facts, and we'd vote for Bush? There's still time for you to reclaim him from the dark side. Time for you to show him the truth about Bush and Iraq. Time to show him the families of soldiers that had to chip in for body armor. Time to let him in on the secret that National Guard, who are injured in Iraq, do not have real health coverage for the injuries once they return home, and are mostly denied any kind of disability payments if injured. You have lots of work to do. Has he seen F9/11? He needs to see it again, soon. Best of luck.

He's 26. And, no, he has not seen F9/11 even though it was shown on base. I would like to see it with him, that is for sure. Thanks for the info! I will be doing some further research.
