Do Sen. Norm Coleman's (R-MN) kids not live with him?
I just heard this on AAR, but I wanted to be sure. If this is true, it's one hell of an example of GOP family values...:eyes:

1. I've heard talk that Norm is a bit of a womanizer.
Not that I would spread gossip about married Republicans who champion "family values"....

4. That's the rumour around town
Of course, nobody will substantiate it. But it would not suprise most of us, who know that his "wife" has been living in Hollywood since his first term as St. Paul's mayor.

18. Shit! You're correct! UTTERLY ridiculous story here:
Don't ask me why ('cause I don't know) but for some odd reason I was invited to be a judge of the "Mrs. California Pageant" at Knotts Berry Farm some months ago. I bet the organizers were listeners of mine at some point. Whatever. One of my fellow judges was this tall, blonde, pretty model/would-be actress type who was married to Norm Coleman!!! Nice enough gal, didn't talk politics, didn't talk about him while we were all schmoozing together. Then, during the pageant itself, we were all introduced one-by-one, and I almost spit my drink when her intro came. WHOA! Fraternizing with the enemy, I was. And even afterwards, she pretty much kept to herself.

Earlier, we had had a rousing conversation with the Miss Teen California winner who wanted to practice her Q-and-A skills with us, and she'd issued this statement about how she wanted to spread the word about supporting Our President during this time of war and getting all of America behind him, and two of us questioned her about that. One of the other judges was a guy who covered entertainment for the BBC and he was, like me, very much against the war, and we gently but firmly took her to task about it. I told her as a onetime journalist I found it very disappointing that she wanted to use her influence when she went into the working world (NATURALLY, she wanted to get into the news business!!!!!) and reminded her that a real journalist MUST ALWAYS be objective and keep ALL personal views and opinions OUT OF his or her coverage. She listened and didn't argue her point very vigorously. I don't know if it sunk in. But later Nelson (the BBC guy) and I had quite a talk about it. We were both just a wee bit disgusted, and hoped that we had both set her straight. He was quite forceful about it when he questioned her.

Anyway, in the meantime, Mrs. Coleman hung back and didn't bring up any politics, and didn't participate at all in that exchange. In fact, she didn't say much, PERIOD. Maybe she knew SHE was in enemy territory. I realized after the fact that I could have blurted "Oh, WOW! They killed Paul Wellstone for YOUR HUSBAND!!!!!!" But I didn't. Guess I was too stunned to want to make a scene. It probably would have gotten a little ugly. We WERE in ultra-conservative Orange County at the time.

I forget her name. Tall, pretty blonde. But didn't leave much of an impression with you other than that.

3. No, they don't. Not for some time.
His wife Laurie has been living in Hollywood for a number of years, at least, pursuing an "acting career" (she's had a few bit parts and commercials so far). IIRC the kids live with the grandparents most of the time, while Normie lives in D.C.

I believe the kids moved in with the grandparents when Laurie moved to Hollywood, which was before Norm's second term as St. Paul's mayor. I remember she put in an appearance at Norm's victory party when he won his second term. She was wearing something that could be best described as a short slip or a nighty, and her hair was all tossled-looking when Norm made his victory speech. I'm not a prude by any means, but she looked like some hoochie-mama, IMHO, and didn't seem to be dressed very appropriately for the occassion.

Yup, that's our Norm. But, at least as he says, he's a "99% improvement" over Wellstone. Whatever. :eyes:

That this worthless non-entitity is the successor to Paul Wellstone. For Coleman to say that he's a "99% improvement" over a great, principled man like Paul Wellstone is nothing short of libel.

Please, Minnesota DU'ers. Correct this in 2008.

10. Believe me, we are SO on this!!!!
Norm's got a HUGE target on his @$$ already, and it's still another four years until he's up for re-election! Just about every big-name DFLer has been mentioned as a possible opponent.

The fact that he votes lockstep w/ Shrub-n-Cheney (around 99%) and has gone back on his vote against drilling in ANWR makes this almost too easy. If Shrub goes down this year, his next four years will be hell.

Thank Allah we still have Mark Dayton around. We'd be in trouble without him!

Yes, she lives in Hollywood pretty-much full-time, because she wants an acting career.

7. He was.
Jon only got one really good jab in at him - noting his changing from the DFL to Republican party, and asked, "Would that be considered a flip-flop?"

The rest was pretty mild. Coleman tried to work in some Kerry digs, but the audience didn't respond.

Coleman is a true asshole and he only won because the MN Repukes managed to blame the DFLers for politicizing the memorial.

8. One other interesting thing about TDS last night

Jon made a pointed remark about the 'loyalty oaths' being required at Bush events. Coleman is either so completely out of touch with the general population that he really hasn't heard about this, or he straight up out-and-out lied. He made a comment to Stewart that he must have been watching too many move-on.org commercials, or something to that effect, and said that he had certainly never been asked to sign one! :eyes:

25. And if you include the absentee ballots for Senator Wellstone
and add them to the votes that Senator Mondale received, COLEMAN LOST. Yet Coleman's absentee ballots were allowed and counted.

That election will remain in my mind as one of the worst ever in this state. Asshole Pawlenty would have lost too, if Tim Penney hadn't been in the race; he and Roger Moe split the Democratic vote.

9. Garrison Keilor talked about this
After Coleman won, Keilor said it was such a special event that "they even flew his wife into Minnesota" for the party.

It was pretty punchy.

12. That's right, it was Keillor's "coming out" piece as a Dem
It caused quite a stir here in MN when he published it. Before Paul's death, GK had always been a loyal DFLer, but he wasn't very public about it. Now, he's hosting fundraisers for candidates and the party. In fact, he's hosting one this Saturday! It's great to have him on our side!

16. Here is the piece by Keillor. "Hollow Victory For A Hollow Man"
How Norm Coleman sold his soul for a Senate seat.

http://www.theblackflag.org/2002/garrison01.html

Norm is glib. I once organized a dinner at the Minnesota Club to celebrate F. Scott Fitzgerald's birthday and Norm came, at the suggestion of his office, and spoke, at some length and with quite some fervor, about how much Fitzgerald means to all of us in St. Paul, and it was soon clear to anyone who has ever graded 9th grade book reports that the mayor had never read Fitzgerald. Nonetheless, he spoke at great length, with great feeling. Last month, when Bush came to sprinkle water on his campaign, Norm introduced him by saying, "God bless America is a prayer, and I believe that this man is God's answer to that prayer." Same guy.

(Jesse Ventura, of course, wouldn't have been caught dead blathering at an F. Scott Fitzgerald dinner about how proud we are of the Great Whoever-He-Was and his vision and his dream blah-blah-blah, and that was the refreshing thing about Jesse. The sort of unctuous hooey that comes naturally and easily to Norm Coleman Jesse would be ashamed to utter in public. Give the man his due. He spoke English. He didn't open his mouth and emit soap bubbles. He was no suck up. He had more dignity than to kiss the president's shoe.)

Norm got a free ride from the press. St. Paul is a small town and anybody who hangs around the St. Paul Grill knows about Norm's habits. Everyone knows that his family situation is, shall we say, very interesting, but nobody bothered to ask about it, least of all the religious people in the Republican Party. They made their peace with hypocrisy long ago. So this false knight made his way as an all- purpose feel-good candidate, standing for vaguely Republican values, supporting the president.

He was 9 points down to Wellstone when the senator's plane went down. But the tide was swinging toward the president in those last 10 days. And Norm rode the tide. Mondale took a little while to get a campaign going. And Norm finessed Wellstone's death beautifully. The Democrats stood up in raw grief and yelled and shook their fists and offended people. Norm played his violin. He sorrowed well in public, he was expertly nuanced. The mostly negative campaign he ran against Wellstone was forgotten immediately. He backpedalled in the one debate, cruised home a victor. It was a dreadful low moment for the Minnesota voters. To choose Coleman over Walter Mondale is one of those dumb low-rent mistakes, like going to a great steakhouse and ordering the tuna sandwich. But I don't envy someone who's sold his soul.

This is a dead on accurate description of what a creep Coleman is.
I am one Minnesotan who would welcome a run by Al Franken.

P.S. Can Senators be impeached or recalled for being slimy?

I still wear it when I go to protests.

21. Thanks for the Welcome.
And Uptown is my little slice of heaven, I can't wait to return. (i'm currently doing the hermit thing out here in the sticks for the summer)

I actually had a little 'encounter' with norm a couple of years ago. St. Paddy's day, I was in the Local. Norm came in with some of his hired goons. One of the goons shouldered me aside from my place at the bar so Norm could get in. I spent the next few minutes whistling my 's' sounds when I spoke. (This was before had that enormous gap in his teeth fixed, and before he started canneling Mayor Quimby every time he opened his fool mouth) He and the 2 goons started giving me the evil eye after awhile, so I skeedaddled down the street to Mackensie's.
Fuck Coleman indeed.

23. Wait--you mean Minnesotans fell for this????
I've seen some strange families but this is really funny. Wife is in Hollywood looking to be an actress like some stage struck 18 year old. Norm is in D.C. fucking over the American people after changing his stripes. And the kids are thrown to Grandma and Grandpa to raise. What the hell were you guys drinking up there on election night??? Doesn't this family seem a bit screwed up?? Isn't there something that seems a bit fake about this marriage?? Is this a guy you would want to buy a used car from??? Lutherans, you know better than this.
