Epiphany on Troop Withdrawal from DMZ

I was just listening to Hardball where tweety and Howard Dean
were discussing the troop withdrawal from Europe and Korea...

And something was bothering me.

I mean, the reason that we commit so many troops to the DMZ is
that not that they are a strong military deterrent to North Korea
invading, but rather that they are NOT a token force, so any attack
by the North against the South would cause 1000s of Americans
to die, and elicit a strong (possibly nuclear) response from the
United States.

So I'm wondering why withdraw the troops... and then it hit me.
They WANT Korea to launch a strike against the south, possibly
sooner rather than later while the North has limited numbers
of nukes and limited capability to launch ICBMs (and possibly
the already deployed star wars is thought to be able to deal
with small numbers of crude missiles). They are trying to
provoke the North into an attack on the South.

I know, I'm paranoid. But remember that train explosion...
I thought it was a black op gone bad... but it could be a
black op executed perfectly (antagonize, but be sure
to miss Kim).

How soon?

1. First Hand Knowledge.
I was stationed in South Korea from 1997 to 1998. The North Korean threat is real, but not as serious as it once was. China has turned her back on NK. Our troops are not the only deterrent in the peninsula. Hundreds of thousands of SK troops are there, not to mention every man under the age of 50 has had at least two years of military experience. It proves how badly we need more soldiers that they are deploying the 2ID off peninsula for the first time in history.

3. I'm sure that SK has a lot of troops

and that they are well trained and outfitted.

But by us withdrawing, we are sending a signal to NK.

And there is a lot of reasons for NK to start a war, their
economy is much worse than the surrounding nations, including China.
They have food problems, health problems, opportunity problems,
and so on. A nice war of "reunification" would be a great moral
boost (as long as it goes well) as well as an economic boost
(temporary). Plus, Kim is simply insane enough to believe that
he can "win" or force a reunification on his terms.

4. I agree.....
It still disgusts me the way the GOP is attacking everyones military record. I am aghast at the fact that one of the most heroic men in politics (John McCain) is being called a traitor. And the other one(i cant remember his name, but is missing two legs and an arm)....What will they say about me when i get out? That my injuries are fake? That I did not earn my medals? The way they treat soldiers from all wars is disgusting. IF Dubya would have actually showed up, we wouldnt have a problem with him bashing other soldiers. He would have absorbed some honor and integrity.....

5. I have to say that...
I can't complain about us taking troops out of foreign countries. I just hope we reduce the number of people in the military under President Kerry.
