Hmm, a 1992 event just occured to me: Clinton stopped at an Ohio
restaurant on the campaign trail.

Anyway, the place was Parma Pierogis.

Bill Clinton stopped in unannounced, and had a sample of the pierogis. From what I understand, he loved them. In a press release dated 5/12/1993, he commended them for the small business that they were.

Now, the shop closed up in 1999.

I wonder how much the Ohio Repukes really had to do with that?

(BTW, there's also a picture of some of the George H. W. Bush supporters around the Parmatown Mall in 1992. All dressed up in their pointy-headed white linen finest. Honest. Made the front page of the Plain Dealer the next day.)

1. 50% of all restaurants fail in the first year
6 years + whatever they had before clinton visited makes a rather nice run.

i'm sure some hardcore repukes boycotted the place, at least for a while, but the celebrity and advertising effect surely more than outweighed that.

sometimes a restaurant closing is just a restaurant closing.

2. I remember that. I don't think the Republicans had anything to do with it

Crain's Cleveland Business did a few articles on the restaurant when it was in trouble. I can't remember the details, but to the best of my recollection the owner had oversold her stock, or it was overpriced, or there was some other problem with it that brought on a lot of her problems (I have no head for stocks talk). I think "Big Chuck" Shodowski of Big Chuck and Li'l John fame (though he'll always be Big Chuck of Hoolihan and Big Chuck fame to me, antique that I am) lost some money in it.
