Will vocal opposition to Bush stop me from getting a Top Secret clearance?
Just started a job where I will need a Top Secret clearance, which the job is paying for. I will be working as a contractor for some defense-related government agencies (yeh, I have some misgivings about this... am still trying to work them out).

My question is - will my vocal opposition to current administration's tactics - even my involvement on this forum - keep me from being cleared?

1. You never know what it might get you these days

The US is now a nation where anyone can be seized and disappeared at any time, without due process, constitutional protection, or recourse whatsoever, all because one man chooses to decree that they are an Enemy of the State.

2. If you don't get it
this forum will be the reason. And you will probably be better off ultimately.

3. If you don't get the job because of your political views,
be grateful. You don't want it.

4. Your involvement here shouldn't prevent you from
getting a clearance - how would they know?

How "vocal" of opposition do you mean? Are you talking about discussions amoung family and friends, or do you take to the streets and protest?

5. Went to two anti-war rallies in March...
...buy many books that are left-leaning, radical, etc. Am vocal to friends and some relatives. Subscribe to action alerts online.

I suppose that since much of this involvement is online, there is a good chance it can be monitored (even if I do it from home)??

Yes, I'm quite ambivalent about this job - but its in my field (graphic/web design) and pays very well.

8. Well yourpolitical views "shouldn't" affect your clearance
but I understand your concern.

I wouldn't worry about working for them myself - you are simply trying to make an honest living in the field of your choice. But that is an opinion that could invite flames - that I wouldn't respond to anyway.

Good luck

6. That's a really good question
Edited on Sun Aug-24-03 04:28 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
I had a top secret clearance during my time in the Army Signal Corps (1974-76) and, had the military checked (and they undoubtedly did), my personal disregard for Richard Nixon would have certainly surfaced during the investigation. So, in my day, I'd say they were more interested in criminal matters than political ones. Whether or not that's still true almost thirty years later in Johnny Asscrust's New "Fascist-a-Go-Go Amerikkka" I cannot say.
John
Which says bundles about Richard Nixon, WhistleAss, Asscrust and America itself, I guess.
