Fox fact check

On Fox News this morning, the woman anchor was interviewing ex-Republican Air Force General Merrill McPeak. She asked him, "What do you think of Kerry's plan to bring home all troops in six months?" He said I don't think Kerry said that. She said loudly and agitated, "Yes he did, it's a quote, he said it". (I'm paraphrasing).

I don't remember Kerry making that statement. I remember Kerry saying he plans to bring home half of the troops by the end of his first term.

Has anyone heard the "six month" quote? Does anyone have any Kerry quotes on this issue that they can link to?

2. Actually I heard a misleading quote from a Fox reporter stationed in Iraq

saying that the new ceasefire victory in Iraq was a good sign that the troops would be coming home soon. Yeah, right!

You'll notice how Kerry calls for US troop reduction only if international forces can supplement existing US forces. Also:

Kerry said his goal would be to reduce the number of American troops in Iraq within six months of taking office, but he said he would put more troops into the country "if the commanders ask for it."

"Obviously, we have to see how events unfold," he said. "The measurement has to be, as I've said all along, the stability of Iraq, the ability to have the elections, and the training and transformation of the Iraqi security force itself."

Do some googling on "Kerry six months Iraq" and read the headlines. Obviously he's not calling for overall reduction, and not "quitting" on Iraq, but you wouldn't know that from the headlines. Also, NewsMax has the top two results, which is kind of sickening.

This is a 101 course on how Republicans manipulate the message. "Kerry calls for troop reduction in six months...clearly, this means Kerry wants Iraq to fall into the hands of insurgents and terrorists."
